Jorane - Sous-Marin Marion

Jorane is French-Canadian, and plays the cello. And... that sentence is not in the least descriptive of what it is she does, though those are the two facts that always come up first. Easier to namecheck/genrecheck: Shiina Ringo, Bjork, free jazz, "contemporary classical", Sigur Ros, those Yoko Kanno songs with lyrics in a made-up language. She's really good but I never got around to buying any of her albums, because amazingly enough she gets radioplay. ^^; Here, anyway. I've always had the impression she was virtually unknown outside Quebec.

The only other Jorane track I have, title unknown. Although I have actually heard people cover this at a school concert of some sort.

Along related lines: I'm currently listening to the streaming radio show of one Tsujiko Noriko. Link from [livejournal.com profile] imomus's blog, so one expects avant-garde randomosity (and it is, sort of), but she's really good. Actually she sounds stoned out of her mind but the music is ace. XD Melodic, spooky ambient electronica with actual lyrics, that if I owned I'd probably put on my Ghost in the Shell FST. I have been compiling one, believe it or not, though it's one of those mixes that'll be done when it's done and no sooner.

For [livejournal.com profile] fable, or rather because I was reminded that despite the impression I get from my RL social circle, not everyone in the entire universe has heard the following:

Khaled and Rachid Taha - Abdel Kader (live)

From the 1,2,3 Soleils live-in-Paris disc. This is the greatest song ever. No, seriously. The greatest song ever. (What he says at the end: "For those who don't understand the language - these are only songs to bring us closer together.")

Khaled - Melha

I think the mp3 cuts off at the end, actually, but... I don't care. XD;; I will love anything that has booty bass because I'm cheap, but if you tell me you don't want to dance to this I will think you are lying.

Rachid Taha - Ya Rayah

Once again, despite my impression not everyone in the entire universe etc. (Wouldn't it be Rashid Taha in English, come to think of it? Never mind...) This is the version off Carte Blanche, I don't know if the original album version is any different. I think I'm actually going to go buy Tékitoi today. I've listened to it, it's a great (rock) album, but what really clinches it is his cover of "Rock the Casbah". Who doesn't want an Arabic version of "Rock the Casbah"? Uhuh.

When you get this, I demand you post it.

(I've DL'ed the songs, and am listening to them while $BOSS is not on the phone.)

*amused* You know, there's a list of the top 50 cover songs out there... and the Rock The Casbah cover is ranked 40something (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2004/11/20/bmcovercont20.xml&sSheet=/arts/2004/11/20/ixtop.html).

I am so curious. XD (That list made me sparkle shamelessly cos they had Jeff Buckley AND Ryan Adams ranking high. Mwahahaha.)

Grabbed some songs. Thanks <3
