What I like about this story: the fact that it doesn't have the feel of a character study, or a moment lifted out of the headlong rush (with wild veers and U-turns) of the series, even though it is. There's the canonical sense of suspense to it instead, that nervous tension.

Oddly, L offered no correction. "We should remember that the life of a man is not to us what it is to Kira."

He frowned. "But it's still strange, isn't it? They all seem to get so...careless."

"They?"

"The Kiras. Killing more and more people, with less and less discretion."

L's thumb crept slowly towards his mouth, although his expression remained unchanged. "Raito-kun, you have some alternative explanation?"

oh man i am not worthy of your reccage. nevertheless, i thank you. because i was not trying to go for blatant character introspection, and i was afraid it happened anyway.
