petronia: (damn i'm good)
[personal profile] petronia
So [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_hate now comes with anime thread, and predictably I am less amused and more inclined to reflexive argument. Saints forbid I should feel impelled to speak up for you if you happen to be, say, a goodficcer of my personal acquaintance, of course; no, I'm dying over here because I want to defend Jean D.'s Princess Aya. Seriously. I'm just having trouble formulating a paragraph that contains enough five-syllable words ganked from lit theory to sate me.

......Oh, what the hell, life's too short. *posts*

From the Fantasia Programme Book:

"If MechaGodzilla is built using Godzilla's bones and DNA, does it not become a cyborg? A living entity?"

Discuss!

You are not my son. XD (... seriously, though, I hope that's performance art on your part, not a real attempt at discussion.)

I think I need more clarification on the actual MechaZilla construction. Specifically: is its brain/nervous system organic?

Well, performance art, yes (check the thread XD). In the sense that it's sort of like going to the Death Note lj-comm (have you read it btw, and if not, why on earth not?) and announcing that I love Misa's character because she's a pre-emptive Mary Sue on the part of the mangaka. I'd love it if someone would come out and actually discuss the thing on that level with me, that is, but I accept from the beginning that people are not going to have l'esprit ludique. XD

MechaGodzilla: *scans* developed using the bones and DNA of the original Godzilla. Eventually starts having Godzilla's memories, FSS style, and turns against mankind. Nope, can't really help you. It looks like a Godzilla-shaped transformer robot.

I have some Death Note, but not all, and then I lost the link. So. ... give me the link, and I will download the rest read it and discuss it with you. (And, yes, the anon was me, as if you hadn't guessed.) Pre-emptive Mary Sues are cool.

Hmm. Well, given the memories thing, I'd say it's neural network is probably organic and in some way at least a "child" of Godzilla's own. So, actual creature/cyborg.

Pop-science of it all aside, granted.

DN's here. (http://bonatirergallery.com/DN/) You're going to see Misa's room and crack up. Alex got it too - overwhelming sensation of DIDN'T I BUMP INTO THIS GIRL IN HOT TOPIC OR JAPANESE EQUIVALENT THEREOF. She has a tragic yet clichéd history and all the cool powers! Even the gods of death are in love with her!

ext_9935: (tell me what is this feeling)
From: [identity profile] tongari.livejournal.com
:O! I had that feeling, but wasn't sure what to call it. now I know. xD

and that thread. entertaining but ouch. I rememer a similar 'name an artist everyone loves except you' thread on the eatpoo forum which went very quickly from famous artists to each other, as though the forum itself was not a raging beast already.

also, didn't 'fandom' use to mean the followers of a series, rather than the producers of fanwork? because the post seems to be more for deflating egos than anything else xD;;

Whaaat? But that is the very reason that I love Misa too?! By rights, we should all love her for she is a pseudo-reader avatar (er, that speaks a bit much/sometimes these random fandom hates are disturbingly revealing. I have found that to announce that an inappropriate character is a Mary Sue is tantamount to announcing that you have the hugest fangirl crush ever and that you experience jealousy towards a fictional character. I should say this in the Suikofandom sometime. :P)

From: [identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com
Yes, yes, exactly. :P It's just that you do have the people on the comm saying "I hate her, her motivation is weak and she makes all women look bad with her bubbleheadedness," and I'm like no no, you're not getting the joke here.

As Alex put it, "Girl, can't you see he's just using you? Also the yaoi fen will rip you to pieces!"

From: [identity profile] worldserpent.livejournal.com
Yeah, the joke isn't being gotten, I suppose.

But also, those comments irritate me because there is no reason why a character needs to have a good (as in approvable by audience) motivation if the audience is not supposed to approve, or why a female character must make all women look good.

But I enjoy the suffering of the people on the comm. XD

Actually, I love pre-emptive Mary Sues. They give me a lot of confidence in the author, because they reassure me that the author understands not only the fannish need for Mary Sues, but also the need for relationships that do not center around her.

I guess it seems to me that the author is kind of channeling all the fan power that can accumulate behind a Mary Sue into something that he can control, in order to make it work to the advantage of the story? Hm, I feel like I am being unclear here.

In the case of Sakura (Naruto), I felt that she was a very good pre-emptive Sue for a while. She took those aspirations that some female fans have, and kept them not only in plain sight as a main character, but also safely away (thanks to Sasuke's unresponsiveness) from damaging the story by creating a Sue vortex. I think Misa's portrayed foolishness does the same thing - she is a Sue, and yet Raito regards her with slight disdain, and therefore holds her in a position where her Sue-ness cannot usurp the plot. She is a wonderful marketing technique.

...

Wow, did that make any sense at all? I'm barely awake here. Sorry for jumping into your conversation, this is just something I have given a lot of thought to.

Oh, you make total sense. I'm just especially fond of Misa because it seems to me that the mangaka isn't only giving her that position for the sake of the story, but is intentionally inserting all the groaner tropes we typically associate with the Platonic ideal(?) of a fannish Mary Sue. She's such a picture-perfect denizen of FFN it's scary. XD One must assume the Japanese have their own equivalents.

Basically I'm paranoid, but after that tennis business I think the DN mangaka will stop at nothing. XD

Haha! Yes, he seems to know how to push our pop culture buttons with satire, eh? I am looking forward to his treatment of Misa's character with an odd sort of cynical glee, honestly. He seems very clever, and I do hope he doesn't disappoint.

And that's why we adore Misa. Pre-emptive Mary Sue makes her worthwhile, and allows her to play against sociopathic characters who really are the male equivalent of MS. Except Misa is sane.

If we are following FSS philosophy, of course MechaGodzilla is a living entity. If particles of the LED dragon all through the seven dimensions are considered to be living, then I don't see why MechaGodzilla can't. Mind you, this is under the assumption that MG feels. Emotions in relation to Godzilla seem to be a big thing.

And only on your lj can I find such stimulating conversation ^_^

I caved and commented on the latest "H8 NEWBIES OMG" comment, because MAN, I just went through 3 pages of h8 and I deserve something, I still count myself as a PoT newbie in a way OMG INDIRECT INSULT DIE, and because I was very offended by the double exclaimation marks :O

Ah, well I've learnt with a lot of this schtuff that if you go through and point your involvement out to people, they're all like, "Oh yeah, but I didn't mean you, I meant all the other ones!" So I'm just like, eh. XD

Actually they've slammed a lot of people I know personally. But whotthehell, it gives people a chance to work out their emotional overinvolvement in a nice quiet spot secluded from the rest of fandom, so to speak.

I just got back from that community, and after having seen all the interesting viewpoints regarding some of my favorite authors...I do believe reading your posts and the replies it engendered, was the most lucid thing in that thread. Should I be questioning my sanity? ^__^

It gives me a weird feeling, though, going through all that stuff. I don't think I'll go back there again, especially when the X-Files thread goes up. I loved that series sooo much.

Cheers!

I'm supposed to be putting it up for someone in a week or so, when I get my hands on the thing (you're not the only person to make this request ^^;;). Will drop you a note at that time. ^^v

Huzzah!  And also, I feel I should thank you for practically single-handedly keeping me in music.  I never listen to the radio outside of the car, which is not mine, so I find all your fsts marvelous. ^_____________^
