Oops, forgot to take down the TeniPuri FST yesterday. o_O; Well, it's done now. Have a spot of music, flist persons:

Sun Yanzi - Aiqing Zhenshu (Love Diploma)

Love Diploma (Aiqing Zhengshu)

Of course there's a bit of loneliness
When you're not by my side
I always think more about your face
Distance is an examination
Testing if the promises we made
To love each other
Will become concrete in the end

We're still learning about love
Learning the language of partnership
Learning to forgive, learning not to shed tears
And when we've learnt to fly
Winging over dark nights and obstacles
Our days will graduate from solitude

We'll exchange a little more hard work
For a little more happiness
Even if there's still a ways to go
When we've learnt to endure, when we've learnt to give
Surely this love will have a diploma
To prove that we'll never be lonely again

Usual kind of sensitive wistful Cpop love song; Chinese fic tends to have this feel as well. The album this comes off is one of those killer pop albums that don't pretend to anything but that you can just spin forever. This is track 2, the following is track 3:

Sun Yanzi - Tian Hei Hei (The Sky Is Dark)

Piano ballad, emo as fuck. ^^; One pictures people hearing this on the radio for the first time, bawling their eyes out for a solid hour and then calling the radio station to demand that they play it again. I'll translate the lyrics once I get home so non-Mandarin speakers can get a sense of the thing, though it may simply not be as atavistically tearjerking if you don't have Chinese grandparents who speak a different dialect from you (ah, childhood).

Tian Hei Hei (The Sky Is Dark)

Note: The pinyin corresponds to the Mandarin pronunciation of the song title but not how those words are sung in the actual lyrics - the grandmother's lullaby is in Fukienese.

When I was little
And threw tantrums
My grandmother
Would always sing to soothe me
Summer afternoons
An old song comforted me
I think it went like this

"The sky is dark, about to rain
The sky is dark, is dark"

I left childhood behind
I had my own life
Novel songs and novel ideas
At times when I couldn't control
My waywardness and impulses
I forgot there was such a song as this

"The sky is dark, about to rain
The sky is dark, is dark"

I fell in love with someone who made me struggle
Without a thought for myself
I was sure that was the world to which I aspired
I hit walls head-on and sideways
I was misunderstood, I was deceived
Is there's alway something missing
Behind the facade of the adult world?
Every day I'm faced with branching choices
On the path that I walk
I miss the simple little joys of the past
Love always makes one cry
Makes one feel unfulfilled
The sky is wide but hard to see clearly
It's so lonely...

When the sky is dark
I remember that song again
And suddenly I'm hoping for
A quiet rain to fall
So grandmother sang her wisdom to me a long time ago
Even when it rains you must walk forward bravely...
I believe everything will blow past
I want to go home very badly now

"The sky is dark, about to rain
The sky is dark, is dark"

Toquinho e Vinicius de Moraes - Carta Ao Tom 74

Brazilpop classix... I said I'd post this the other time, so I am. Gorgeous melody, light as sunshine on water. Also like the lyrics, or what I could gather from babelfishing and squinting. XD

Eee, more Stefanie. I am 0wnzed by her.

I really like music in languages that I don't speak, but it makes it sort of difficult when I get the songs stuck in my head.

Please, it's SteFanie, not Stephanie.

And your pinyin suxx0rZ. It's Ai Qing Zheng Shu, not Zhen Shu (But this one must be my mistake, since I originally labelled it "Zhen Shu").

[I've never listened to such Beck. I used to listen to his songs circa end of HS and beginning of CEGEP. And always had his cracked up songs like Loser. Now it's just like, give me a gun right now!! But it's good stuff. You remember that song to which the Jim Carrey character drives home to after breaking up with Kate Winslett? Well, it's Beck. Blah.]

I spelt it like it was on the one file which carried her English name. (Which prolly comes from you anyway. Where else would I've gotten it? XD) And the pinyin was you too. It did occur to me that it was wrong yesterday, but I was too lazy to check plus FTP in and change the link and file name.

Heh, ironic how that works, isn't it. *g* I've translated the lyrics, though, hope that helps.

And haven't heard Smoke City, no. I'll take it as a rec then?

I've downloaded these, probably to listen to them several weeks hence, sometime after I've recovered from Tommy airline, which I'm only just absorbing now for the first time because I'm slow like that but oh. my. god.

...I'll just be over here in the pink sparkly room, playing with ponies and generally being six years old again. LIFE IS SHINY THANK YOU TOMMY.

Oh, I love. The first song dumps me right back into childhood; my parents were constantly playing that style of song. (At some point I shall dig into Dad's CD collection and come up with all sorts of sappy 70's and 80's HK pop.)

The second really makes me wish I understood more Mandarin; listening for Cantonese equivalents gets me nowhere. It's beautiful. I have a soft spot for emo piano a mile wide. ^^;

Well, I've translated the lyrics, so hope it helps. ^^v (BTW, the entries on your pitas blog doesn't show up in IE. ^^; I've seen the same thing happen with other people before; I think it's a CSS thing, but have never been able to figure out what the bug was.)

Thanks for the translation! Definitely helps. Whole new dimensions of wistfulness and emo. (They don't show up? ah well; it's not like I've been posting that much anyway. Thanks for the tip. ...stupid IE.)

Loved the first two songs. Couldn't understand a word, but I'm convinced that they are the most brilliant song lyrics ever.

Thank you for the music!
