Been a while since the last music post, hasn't it? I know, I said I'd do an in-depth write-up of Tommy february6, but that requires a level of poesy I'm not aspiring to these couple of days, being short on sleep. ^^; Over the weekend, maybe. Meanwhile you get a mix CD to make up for the last two weeks, to wit:

The Prince Of Tennis Fanon Soundtrack

...Inspired by Tin's OST Project, of course, only I'm still tweaking my PMK entry, so think of this as an hors concours screening. Especially since - well, I could've compiled a CD of songs that remind me of TeniPuri manga canon, but where's the fun in that? XD XD XD Instead I compiled a CD of songs that serve as a impressionistic stroll through the coked-out and lovable online ficcing fandom, i.e. sort of like Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition only much dumber. And with many more analog synth sounds.

People who are not into Prince of Tennis: think of it as an 80s party mix.

The Tracks

01) Toquinho - Acuarela (Watercolour)
We kick of with something relatively normal and sunny, the lyrics of which actually remind me of the series as a whole. Though it's in Spanish, so you have to take my word for it.

02) Queen - Bicycle Race
And now relatively normal goes down the tubes. [livejournal.com profile] starlighter and I had a lengthy discussion re Queen song associations to TeniPuri. I narrowed it down to this one, which should be nicely obvious.

03) Mylène Farmer - Dessine-moi un mouton (Draw Me A Sheep)
Catchy synthpop number about Le Petit Prince, existential ennui and the fundamental absurdity of the universe. ^_^ < -- Fuji smile

04) Freezepop - Tenisu no boifurendo
Gacked off [livejournal.com profile] beeblebabe, the fount of all evil (as if the HnG French prostitute fic arc didn't clue you in). In the current context, think of this song as a TeniPuri Mary Sue on FFN - that someone composed using only phrases from her first-year Japanese textbook, for the sake of "authenticity". Unadulterated genius.

05) Pet Shop Boys - Flamboyant
Three guesses, and the first two don't count.

06) Erasure - Love To Hate You
All Ishida Akira characters remind me of Erasure. Why is that? It's not as if he sounds like Andy Bell... Anyway, this is for all those traumatising slutty!Mizuki fics I keep stumbling over. I'd be able to write angst for this series if I didn't keep getting songcalls like this.

07) Tommy Angels - Ouen suru kara
The cheerleader song - that is, actively sung by Tommy's cheerleaders. Think Tomoka. Think Saori. Think fanboy!Jirou and the Hyoutei Hundred.

08) Spitz - Neko ni naritai
Karupin: Series Uber Seme. MomoRyo, I guess, 'cos if you wanna get with Ryouma you're much better off being the cat. Sorry to say.

09) Poxy - Sweet Tooth
As aforementioned, the ultimate Marui Bunta song. Or maybe I just like it enough to repost. *g*

10) >Bis - Stray Cat Blues
It's actually fanon!Kaidou, though. ......Eheheh. (Bis cover because it fits better with the electro backing, and I like it better anyhow.)

11) Pet Shop Boys - Can You Forgive Her?
No use in me saying it's the Cruelest Kamio Song Call Ever if I don't post it and duck the flames. *ducks flames and flees XD*

12) Nelly - Pimp Juice
...I'm out of excuses, aren't I? (But have you listened to the backing tracks on Inui's image "songs"?)

13) Freezepop - Lazy
[livejournal.com profile] tiamatv's AtoJi Hyoutei Roommates series (yes, we're getting down to specifics), which I should really comment on one of these days. *is shot*

14) Depeche Mode - Only When I Lose Myself
[livejournal.com profile] sesame_seed's D1 Kakumei, aka barefaced plea for smutfic. XD At this point the mix was progressing by virtue of logical elimination: if Hyoutei is PSB and St.R is Erasure, then obviously Rikkai is Depeche Mode. ...What?

15) Erasure - She Won't Be Home
Except Yuuta isn't a girl, but details details. This is actually a depressing Christmas song I forgot to post in December, along with all the other depressing Christmas songs.

16) Hirakawachi 1-chome - Sakura no kakusu wakare michi
It's a song about graduating junior high, you know. *thumps* And remembering parting with a sempai from one's freshman year, but three years are fleeting, and it's sakura blossom time again... no, really, that's the song.

17) Stephanie Sun - Fengzheng (Kite)
Yes, I'm cruel. But not as cruel as those of you who actually write angstfic about Ryouma leaving for America or Tezuka leaving for Germany. And if you don't speak Chinese you're missing out on my revenge contribution anyway, which is very unfair.

18) New Order - Here To Stay (Full Length Vocal)
[livejournal.com profile] one_if_by_land and [livejournal.com profile] two_if_by_sea's Power Triangle fic arc. I'm incapable of making one of these things without putting a New Order track, is the thing... and we're done!

Of course it doesn't cover everything. This could very well have run to two CDs, in which case I'd have put songs for Sengoku ("I should be so lucky, lucky-lucky-lucky") and Akutsu ("You know I'm bad, I'm bad") and so forth, but really you should be glad because the above is the less embarrassing selection. No, seriously.

Well, I'm probably going to have to beam the vid to FTP anyway. So some point today or tomorrow.

Don't be mean to Kabaji. I am fond of him. XD And Mamo-chan in Live-Ac SM is... whoa. (T's been bugging me to get this for her, actually - she was the former BSSM fangirl. I figured I was too many episodes behind. ^^;)

Daifuku: I don't know. Japanesesnacks.com has closed down its retail section. I'd send you some if I entertained any hope of getting them through customs. =_= Forgot to give you some tea and cider powder, too.

We actually debated what "Sakura no kakusu wakare michi" was about in my Japanese class: I thought it was graduation, the teacher thought it was about the death of a loved one. Is there any material indicating authorial intent that would give me the warm glow of justification?
The music looks cool, but I'm on spring break and can't try it, so I can't give any feedback. Sorry.

Glad you, ah, like it. XD (In the interest of Truth and Justice I wanted to say that the canon isn't really like this, but then I remembered that in fact the canon is at times exactly like this. You just have to know which episodes to watch.)

You are beyond awesome.

*

Toquinho - Acuarela (Watercolour) -- It's such a nice song. And makes me want to do my spanish homework. But only vaguely. *procrastinates some more*

Queen - Bicycle Race -- ... no comment. Actually, no, wait. It fits in perfectly with the crack episodes. That's sort of scary.

Mylène Farmer - Dessine-moi un mouton (Draw Me A Sheep) -- Oh! I love this. At first, the title (Draw me a sheep? ~_~) threw me off, but I'm a sucker for the singing style. But like, um, does it really have a sheep "baa"-ing in the very beginning, or am I just imagining things again?

Freezepop - Tenisu no boifurendo -- I can't understand a thing, but I'll take your word on it. I really like the chorus though. The song really makes me think of LadyTron. They both seem to have the same voice echo effect.

Pet Shop Boys - Flamboyant -- >:D This song makes me happy. Seriously.

Erasure - Love To Hate You -- HAHAHA. Man. Mizuki. It sounds lot like Weather Girl's It's Raining Men, but when I try to couple that with Mizuki at the same time, I get very, very bad mental images.

Tommy Angels - Ouen suru kara -- You really have all bases covered, don't you?

Spitz - Neko ni naritai -- Ouch. Diss and diss. Though really, Karupin is probably the series most under-rated player. It's not an easy job, being Ryoma's cat. Publicity's always on his tail.

Poxy - Sweet Tooth -- I really like this group. Then again, I have a fondness for anything upbeat. *weeps because I still haven't gotten to Rikkai* Does Marui chew bubble gum all the time? During matches too? What if he like, swallows accidentally?

Bis - Stray Cat Blues -- XD Kaidoh/Karuto 4evaz!!11!1!

Pet Shop Boys - Can You Forgive Her? -- This is almost too mean. Almost.

Nelly - Pimp Juice -- Because, obviously, the line everyone knows he has yet so say is: "I just wanna be your juice pimp~" Oh god, can you imagine him using that as an excuse? *bursts*

Freezepop - Lazy -- !!!!!!!! *hearts all over the place* I love this, not only because I am biased as hell when it comes to Jirou, but also because the way its sung. It's so... light and soft and still not at all and. <3

Depeche Mode - Only When I Lose Myself -- Wow. This fits really well with her fic. *blinkblink* Even the lazy laid-back beat to it works.

Erasure - She Won't Be Home -- WEEP. OH YUUTA. He must have done something really bad in his past life for all that he has to go through. But! *brightly* He still has Mizuki (matching songs XD), doesn't he? ...Wait a minute -_____-

Hirakawachi 1-chome - Sakura no kakusu wakare michi -- HA. It is settled. Prince of Tennis is so obviously universal. Everyone can relate to pretty tennis boys after all, can't they?

Stephanie Sun - Fengzheng (Kite) -- >:O Angst battled by angst. Man oh man. My heart BREAKS.

New Order - Here To Stay (Full Length Vocal) -- ahaha. I love how the title is "Here to Stay" and yet all of our fics are like, "Quick! Let's split them up before we have to think about characterization and dialogue!" We really are not worthy.

Date: 2004-03-25 05:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] two-if-by-sea.livejournal.com
Ahahaha. Look, more tag-team duo-ing. Because every fandom needs a pair of dorks. *is sorry to you, petronia, for having to figure out if I"m talking to you or Bing* I love your music posts so much.

*

Toquinho - Acuarela (Watercolour) -- It reminds me kind of the soundtrack to "Before Night Falls". Well, of course less screwed up, and less drunk. But still. Very nice. *eyes Bing* You have Spanish homework and you are doing what online?

Queen - Bicycle Race -- I do NOT think I can ever look at Momo riding his bike without thinking of this. And blanching. And cracking myself up ridiculously. And here I thought Bing and I were on crack. "Bicycle races are coming your way/ so forget all your worries!... So look out for those beauties!" AHAHAHAHAHA. No comment.

Mylène Farmer - Dessine-moi un mouton (Draw Me A Sheep) -- Bing, you're not kidding. There are sheep baaing in the beginning of the song. But I adore this song. *is a sucker for things like this, does not doubt petronia's taste in music, grin*

Freezepop - Tenisu no boifurendo -- Please tell me that title is not supposed to be translated as tennis boyfriend. I understand just a little bit of it, but what I do understand, I wish I didn't, because you are right, it does sound like a listening exercise out of my first year textbook. Um. "demo kyoo ame ga furimasu/ dakara uchi ni imasu/ anata wa totemo kawaii desu/ anata no heya he ikitai desu." *blanches* Someone remind me to make a wallpaper out of the lyrics.

Pet Shop Boys - Flamboyant -- Wait, let me guess, Tezuka? XD

Erasure - Love To Hate You -- It sounds lot like Weather Girl's It's Raining Men, but when I try to couple that with Mizuki at the same time, I get very, very bad mental images. Mizuki. In a sparkly suit. Singing, "It's raining men!" at the top of his voice. Um, it doesn't really remind me of It's Raining Men. It just reminds me of um. Gay. Oh wait, this is supposed to be Mizuki. Oh, well, that makes sense.

Tommy Angels - Ouen suru kara -- *is drowning in the sappiness of the melody*

Spitz - Neko ni naritai -- 'cos if you wanna get with Ryouma you're much better off being the cat. Sorry to say. ... It isn't normal to think that that your sentence actually read, "If you wanna get with Ryouma you're much better off getting with the cat" is it? But ahahaha. Poor Momo. And I really do like the song. It's so Sunday-afternoon-Momo-senpai-stop-singing-and-give-me-a-ride-already.

Poxy - Sweet Tooth -- Does Marui chew bubble gum all the time? During matches too? What if he like, swallows accidentally? Jackal gives him the hemlich maneuver?

Bis - Stray Cat Blues -- Kaidoh/Karuto 4evaz!!11!1 HON WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!

Pet Shop Boys - Can You Forgive Her? -- "You're in love, and it feels like pain/ Because you know there's too much truth in everything she claims" this coupled with "Said she was gonna go and get herself a real man instead" and "You drift into the strangest dreams/ Of youthful follies and changing teams". Oh my god. Poor poor poor Kamio. Especially if the "changing teams" thing means he is now gay because some crazy girl makes him dance to disco. *falls over twitching and laughing*

Nelly - Pimp Juice -- Oh my god. This really really REALLY creepily sounds like that "You've Got The Power" song. Even down to the fact they are both talking about JUICE. Oh god, can you imagine him using that as an excuse? *bursts* Inui: "*pauses, blinks* Kaidoh, why are you on the ground?"

Freezepop - Lazy -- "Won't you stay in bed with me/ Eat candy bars and watch tv?" Atobe: "*Considers* No. I'll get fat." Ahahahaa. This song. Such crack.

Depeche Mode - Only When I Lose Myself -- This is really really pleading for smutfic. Oh my god. I would pay for someone to write D1 fic to this song. "There's a thousand reasons/ Why I shouldn't spend my time with you/ For every reason not to be here I can think of two/ To keep me hanging on feeling nothing's wrong." *dies*

Date: 2004-03-25 05:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] two-if-by-sea.livejournal.com
Erasure - She Won't Be Home -- bad, bad, bad. I thought Yuuta was the guy who forgot because he went home to be with Fuji and Mizuki is being lonely and depressed. except now I see it is obviously the other way around. *weeps*

Hirakawachi 1-chome - Sakura no kakusu wakare michi -- *is sad she honestly does not understand a damned thing* Oh well. It's so pretty nevertheless.

Stephanie Sun - Fengzheng (Kite) -- But not as cruel as those of you who actually write angstfic about Ryouma leaving for America or Tezuka leaving for Germany. I HOPE YOU ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT ME. But I've actually heard this song before AND I ADORE THIS SONG SO MUCH. So it is all good. And you will only have yourself to blame if this makes me write about Ryoma leaving for America. Again.

New Order - Here To Stay -- and yet all of our fics are like, "Quick! Let's split them up before we have to think about characterization and dialogue!" I don't know about you, but the reason I don't let them go on is because I'm all, "Quick! Split up before I have to figure out how you move from talking about tennis to kissing!" But yeah. It is kind of weird how the song is called Here to Stay and our fics are anything BUT about permeance.

My Spanish homework isn't due until Monday, and it it this online thing to boot. Have you ever heard of www.quia.com? The whole bloody spanish department is doing it.

And I say, better Kaidoh/Karupin than Kaidoh/Eiji-as-cat. Original is always better than a copy! (No, I don't get the logic to that statement either)

To the whole moving into kissing thing-- for you, it's also, "How do I get them from a tennis court to a place where it's plausible to have sex?" Do you know how many fics out there use, like, stone and tile flooring? I am like, ouch, that's gotta hurt. *cringes, winces, screws eyes shut* I can't write serious public displays of affection either. I get all squicky, and just. How would everyone else react? And like. Then you'd have to go into explanations, and that requires thought that could otherwise be avoided. Dialogue is always an issue with me though. I believe in the philosophy "If you have nothing good to say, then don't say anything at all," and in Prince of Tennis fics, sometimes too much dialogue just kills it (but! if they are apart, they can't talk to each other! *beams*)

OKAY BUT YOU WROTE KAIDOH/KARUTO. SO I WAS CONFUSED.

Kissing thing-- same, same, same. The tile flooring must hurt. And anything happening in showers, NO. EW. Have these people ever BEEN in locker shower rooms? The ground is not the kind of place you want to have sex on. It doesn't even attempt to look sanitary or soft. And yes, it is like what Sunny says about movies. There should always be a lot of silence in between everything, because in real life, you either talk a lot or you don't talk at all, and you definitely do not have in depth talks about love and your relationship unless you are a) breaking up, b) traumatized, c) on a gay dating show, or d) all of the above.

OKAY BUT YOU WROTE KAIDOH/KARUTO. SO I WAS CONFUSED.

... ohmygod, did I? It is, um, a combination of, um, Kabuto as a cat? *curls into a ball* I will never live down all my typing errors. Really, I won't.

HAHAHA. And I still don't get the grunting thing. Not once, in the entire anime, has Tezuka actually grunted. I don't even think he makes "Mmmm" noises. And! Fuji! and his eyes! He really isn't blind in real life *weeps* Can you imagine trying to maneuver his actions blind? ... or maybe he is just talented. Like Yagyuu and Niou. <3

Now that I have finally got around to listening to this, ahaha, much love for the crack.
Mylène Farmer - Dessine-moi un mouton: love this song. It is insanely catchy, plus the Petit Prince reference and all, <3. But I've never actually heard any other Mylène Farmer; if I want to investigate, do you have any song/album recs similar in sound to this? Or is all her music pretty similar?

Freezepop - Tenisu no boifurendo: has been stuck in my head ever since she first posted it. "Evil" does not begin to cover it. (I know someday my Japanese prof will catch me unknowingly singing it, and proceed to laugh her ass off.)

Poxy - Sweet Tooth: If I ever make Marui icons, I know where to go for lyrics. XD

I was going to say PSB - Flamboyant was the best song call ever, but then I got to Nelly - Pimp Juice, and just. [dies]

Mylène Farmer: it's mostly like this, but moodier and more ethereal - "Dessine-moi un mouton" is one of her more upbeat songs. It's also from one of her more recent albums - 1997, something like that - and her older hits have a much more marked 80's synthpop sound. Not that I'm inclined to think of that as a bad thing, as you can probably tell from this mix. XD I pimp her like mad, she's got the most amazing lyrics.

Might I beg you for a translation of her lyrics? I really like the two songs you've pimped so far, but I don't understand a word.
