You know, I think even the Jfandom is kind of fazed by Shinji's Lexidata. Now that's impressive. (Only kind of. Some of them just shrug and proceed to write Kikumaru x Ibu Lexidata fic.)

Actually, what these fanbooks are, are design guides and doujinshi anthologies rolled into one. XD;; About 50/50 creator crack to fan crack, vying with each other in speculation on weighty matters like "What kind of style should Shishido grow his hair out into?" or "Who rooms with whom in St. Rudolph?" And just... staggering amounts of completely useless yet inexplicably amusing information. Seigaku's snack bar menu, Inui's hard drive space, the name of Atobe's white throughbred mare. It's like reading fic, only canon. A week now I've been thoroughly entertaining myself with them and all I've done so far is flip.

Kaidou's entertainment system. I've seen it in doujinshi, actually (you know they only provide all these floor plans so people can draw doujinshi worth a damn), just I assumed it was, y'know, the one in the family living room. But no, apparently it's his. With the huge flat-screen TV and the surround-sound speakers and the DVD player and the glass coffee table he does his homework on and never smudges. [It's... it's almost like my house. *thump*]

Sengoku's tarot book. That he has in his bag? Fuji Yumiko's the author. Apparently he hasn't made the connection between Seigaku tennis player!Fuji and hot fortune-teller chick on late-nite infomercial!Fuji, though. [...Okay, I made that last part up. But I'd be so avant-garde if I shipped Sengoku x Yumiko! XD;; Theirloveissosuperstitious!]

Tachibana cooks. Profile specifies Japanese food, and that he's good at it. [insert own Yamato Nadeshiko joke]

Yanagisawa: Dorm Mommy. "If one person catches cold it gets passed to everyone else in the dorm da ne~! Health is important da ne~!"

And there's Atobe in computer class... They teach programming at Hyoutei, you know. It's like CLAMP Campus without the blowfish.

Mizuki, um, everything. Mizuki reads Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene. Mizuki has delicate skin, so he wears long sleeves and slathers himself with sunblock even in winter. Mizuki sings solo in the school choir. Mizuki refuses to toss his clothes in the laundry pile with everyone else's, eww. Mizuki doesn't like it that their personal effects are stored in open cubicle shelves - other people can see his stuff, eww - so he made a little curtain for his. Mizuki has roses on his armchair cushion and roses on his handkerchief to match the roses on his sweater. Mizuki likes his lip cream to come in a tube, because you have to press with the stick kind and that just kills him. [$$ to donuts says he owns more than two Erasure albums.]

Tezuka's maniacal about personal hygiene. He goes through five cans of deodorant spray a month. [No, when I said useless information I meant it.]

Man, I'm sleepy. XD Off to bed. Responsibilities tomorrow.

Is it bad of me that I'd rather read the fanbooks than the actual manga? I love background info. My favorite part of The Lord of the Rings was the Appendices. (I am most assuredly not kidding)

Then again I got a horrible plot bunny off of reading "The Universe of Honor Harrington"--a background essay--so I guess the TeniPuri folks know that fanbooks *do* breed doujinshika. Like rabbits.

To clarify the last, I think I probably meant as in breeding plot bunnies in doujinshika. Or fan writers. Or, gosh, I shouldn't be posting on LJ at midnight, should I?

I loved the Appendices too! You're right, it's the same appeal. And certainly it's more fun than reading the manga over and over looking for hints.

The fanbook probably breeds doujinshika as well as plot bunnies. *g*

Kaidou was just odd, because of course nothing about him in the series leads one to expect it, and it's not explained in the fanbook. Just... he obviously has this TV that's TWICE THE SIZE OF ANYONE ELSE'S WITH SURROUND SPEAKERS.

Tachibana cooking: the effect on Jfandom appears to be that now everyone assumes An can't cook. ^^;

Mizuki's like a parody, isn't he? And he's got these Vicks cherry drops and curlicue antique hand mirrors and a little diary with a lock and, just, in what universe do people like that take over their high school sports teams? (Because it's all his. The computer is his, the armchair is his, the whiteboard is his, no one gets to touch his schtuff.)

(Bowie: probably only the 80's albums. And Hello Spaceboy. For some reason I don't see Mizuki being into Bowie's glam period. Actual guitars would kill him, he needs teh synth. ...Y'know, Mizuki and Fuji have something in common besides Yuuta: they're both Mac users.)

...The question is, who's Fuuma? XD

...this is the straw that made the camel throw ¥1300 at amazon.co.jp. The crack, I crave more.

Mizuki is the single most foppish creature in the history of history. Am refusing to entertain Atobe-as-hacker mental imagery, as the resulting wave of geeklust would be embarrasing. The Atobe/Kabaji/Jirou == Nokoru/Suou/Akira image, also, I could have done without. It's the little white schoolboy shorts. Ninja Kabaji. And all the girls fawning over Jirou's baking skillz as he dozes off face-first into a cake. Augh my brains. [..eyes sketchbook..]

Geeklust: ahahahaha I know. XD;;; Hyoutei's also got far nicer computers in its lab than Seigaku. FWIW you see Oshitari singing in music class while Sakaki plays the piano (can't remember if Gakuto was in the line-up as well, and I think I saw Taki...?)

Ninja Kabaji! Is where it's at.

Wow, thanks for the information. No wonder TeniPuri fandom is so freakishly large and enduring in Japan. ^_^ Does this herald a new era in shounen jump? Shall future authors follow Konomi-sensei's example to new amounts of insanity and high tax returns?

Also, I'm curious. Who does room with whom in St. Rudolph?

I do dare you to write SengokuXYumikoFuji, so that we can see Fuji's family life even more screwed up.

All I can say is that if they came out with one of these for Hikaru no Go I'd buy it. (I'm dying to know if Ogata's RX-7 is souped up any, and what Kuwabara Honinbo's golf handicap is.) Thing is there have always been fanbooks and artbooks, but they're always glossy and huge and thus prohibitively expensive for the casual fan; the genius of the TeniPuri ones is how downscale they are. Regular tankoubon paper, very little new art or colour pages, tons of fan contributions - weeks of entertainment. XD They look like normal sized paperback novels, and since Japanese bookstores put brown paper dustcovers on I can read them on the metro without feeling like a t00b. It's super.

There's no canon information on who rooms with whom in St.R; that was one of the thematic fan crack pages. Far's I can figure they ask these questions in Jump, invite people to send in their responses (text or art), and the wittiest/trippiest answers are printed in the fanbook with accompanying creator/character commentary. Or maybe they sort random submissions into common topoi. (In this case your mission is to sort the six most important St.R charas into three dorm rooms. You are free to aim for realism, harmoniousness, or - well - crack. It's slightly more complicated than just pairing compatible roommates; for instance, a lot of people left Mizuki in a room on his own, on the assumption that no normal red-blooded teenaged boy would want to live in the kind of environment Mizuki presumably establishes in his own space. XD

I am most amused by the people who insist that Fuji should bunk with Yuuta despite the fact that, y'know, he doesn't go to St.R.

Yuuta: A-aniki? What are you doing here!? WITH A SUITCASE!?
Fuji: But this is my room. ^_^
Yuuta: AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH *wakes up in cold sweat*)

Not really for Jump series, IIRC. HunterXHunter had one that was just more like a magazine and wasn't that expensive. I saw it recently at a bookstore, but since the flame for HXH has cooled I didn't buy WorldXCharacterXBlessing.

Re: Dorms at St. Rudolph's. Hey, but at least with Mizuki, you'd know that the room would be clean. Perhas difficult to breathe in with all the perfume, but it would always be perfectly swept. But I guess considering that it might mean sitting upon a chintz-upholstered chair, they'd rather triple-bunk. Which is understandable.

Any on-crack Rikkai revelations there? They don't explain what's wrong with poor Yukimura, I guess.

Oh, no, Mizuki wouldn't be able to boss people around in Hyoutei, and that would make him sulk neurotically. *g*

Tezuka is obviously obsessive-compulsive. You have to see his room. Everything is lined up exactly, placed at right angles, it's painful to look at. ^^; He folds his school uniform every night as if he were putting it away in storage.

(He's also the exact spitting image of his grandfather the stern bearded judo master, which is hilarious. His poor father is obviously intimidated by both of them alike, and the mother just goes ^_^ and makes breakfast.)

Mizuki has roses on his armchair cushion and roses on his handkerchief to match the roses on his sweater.

If I have to read that line again, my brain will split open at the hairline and combust. Also, Mizuki = boy soprano? For some reason the image of him singing that song in the Lord of the Rings first soundtrack, the one with the boy soprano, is really really funny to my brain. And um, Mizuki/Lip gloss will be come my OTP if I don't do something really really quickly.

P.S. Out of curiousity, what is Inui's hard drive space?
