Vague grumbling
Jan. 3rd, 2004 12:56 amSo much of nothing got done. @#$% Prince of Tennis is a fandom black hole. Just watching the anime is a time abyss - I mean I'm barely in the 30s, still, because everytime I say I'm going to watch it really I swear I get through a couple of episodes and collapse into bed. And then there's two tankoubons' worth or so of manga that I can't read on the metro. What sort of parent names their child Kurobane Harukaze? And why is it that in my dotage I've begun to complain about weird names in manga?
(Well. I worked six hours and urged the office network to struggle up on its wobbly reincarnated knees. 'S not so bad, and in fact a lot better than it was before. But of the schtuff that most of you read me for, fic or GetBackers translations or site revamp - none of that got done. XD;; I did remake the front page layout with Ginji-kun, but now I have to do over the rest with DWMX templates, bleargh.)
I've finally figured out what it is about Tezuka that makes my antennae twitch, though: it's the fact that he's got the same glasses as I do. On some subliminal level every time I see him I think, おい、返して。
EDIT -- Maa ne. To make up for complaints, a Tenipuri drabble. Tsumaranakute wakarinikui mono desu ga.

"His what?"
Fuji turned, brows raised as if to say, what a charming surprise.
"The Sparrow Tail?" He actually demonstrated, giving a hop and a sweep of his racket before falling back into step. "It's Nittouryuu, from the--"
"I know," said Tezuka, who'd caught the reference a second late. He frowned, thinking of Fuji's taste in nomenclature; trying to remember who'd invented the now-ubiquitous sobriquet for Kaidou's whip shot. Inevitable though that one was... "The proper name is one-footed split step."
"With a hand switch?"
"With a hand switch."
"You have no sense of whimsy, Tezuka," Fuji said cheerfully.

There is a 75% chance that
tsutanai will now tell me that I've gotten it wrong. XD [/Inui]
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
More. In terms of word count, quite a bit more. Which is nice to say, but my quantity standards for the past couple of years have been exceedingly low. Going by website updates:
The Berchtesgaden Debriefing chap.3 (WK)
Clean And Well-Lighted (WK)
Game Theory (TeniPuri)
Haru no Tsuki (PMK)
Nosebleed (HnG)
Ramen (HnG)
Rainshine (SSAE)
Open/Close chap.1-2 (WK/FF7)
Summer Movie (Gravitation)
Still Life, With Pumpkins (GB)
Una Música Brutal (GB)
Not counting about a dozen drabbles and snippets, NaNoWriMo, plus works in progress (some of which are @#$% lengthy).
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2003?
Peace Maker, as I'd never heard of it. GB and TeniPuri, fandoms I didn't think I'd want into. *shakes accusing fist in the vague direction of Singapore* Then again, how is one supposed to predict future fandoms anyway?
What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest.
Make me choose between my babies, would you? Setting aside "Rainshine" because most of it was really written last year - a tie between "Una Música Brutal" and "Haru no Tsuki".
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
I did fic request challenges, and learnt that the deadline for a 1000-word fic should - optimally - be set to 10x that of a 100-word fic. >_> Apart from which, it was a pleasant surprise to learn that I can produce on demand, merely that I have no self-discipline and need external expectations to whip me into shape. Er.
Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
(All together now) Finish the works in progress. Try not to let TeniPuri tempt me into writing a bona-fide slash epic, as it will only result in self-loathing.
(It's the Tomoka-chan song! Tommy Angels are... actually, if you've seen Tommy's PMVs, you should have a good idea by now.)

Date: 2004-01-03 10:20 am (UTC)Nittô-ryû, as I understand it, is a two-sword style? Although apparently in the modern day, often modified to favor the left hand (so there's something, if true). Only sparrow-tail move that I know of in the martial arts is in T'ai chi chuan, actually.
... Unless you meant swallow, not sparrow, and then that'd be Sasaki Kôjirô, and either Ganryu-ryu or... um. Something else. (Some people apparently say that he didn't make up that move, but that it was common in the style of those days. I say you can't trust most martial arts "histories" worth spit, but. Ah well.)

Date: 2004-01-03 11:11 am (UTC)Know it's not the swallow counter, though, because... well, first of all because that's Fuji. ^^; (I imagine the fangirls will murder me if I write a story in which Ryouma whaps Fuji over the head with a wooden bat, but I find myself tempted.)

Date: 2004-01-03 11:18 am (UTC)I'd have to wonder about FSS and Musashi (hm, wonder if any of my friends still have their volumes). Anyway: huh.
Well, I'll let you know when I get to Musashi's sword styles (if I'm lucky, Kino will have the "Truth and Legend of Musashi Explained" book I had been eyeing in Ueno, but. XD)
(Hah! I beat the odds! ... Oddly enough, I'm rather pleased by that XD)
