Another eventful week. XD; Alan finished his course of antibiotics, then developed a case of hives, which looked scary but were non-itchy. So I did end up giving him a few doses of Benadryl, but the hives disappeared after three days, as mysteriously as they appeared (although crying and hot baths seemed to make them worse). He's also not sleeping through the night, though my friends who've travelled with their babies have taught me to expect as much. After getting over jet-lag he settled... back into a 9PM bedtime, even though sunset in Shanghai is as early as 5pm right now. =_=

There is definitely a sense now that Alan understands our intentions. He has triumphantly learnt the hand sign for "milk," for instance, although he uses it more broadly, as a greeting or to ask to be held as well as food. The other day he started shaking his head "no" vigorously the moment he heard us talk about giving him water (he has mostly refused to drink plain boiled water here, for some reason). Of the three of us my mom is the "bad cop," since she's the one most concerned about eg. wresting objects out of his hands if deemed too unhygienic to be chewed on, so he'll crawl away from her if he sees her bearing down on him to spoil his fun, or bury his face in my chest and whine. Correspondingly he can now be mischievous, in the sense that he'll do things he knows he's not supposed to, like climb on me and take my glasses off, all with a giggle and a grin. He does have an adorable laugh. T_T

He's also invented some games for himself, that are amusing to watch. For instance, while sitting in his crib he'll stuff one toy after another into the "pocket" between the crib bumper and the bars, then check they're still there, then take them back out and do it over again. He hasn't figured out that: 1) the "pocketed" toys are visible to everyone else, even if they're not visible to him, 2) some toys are too small and fall between the bars, 3) some toys are too big and don't fit into the "pocket". One can see him puzzle over it, like a scientist struggling toward an incipient breakthrough.

He's not as interested in playing "fly me to the moon" as previously, but today we went to a restaurant for lunch with a family friend, and while sitting in the lounge he helped me "read" the entire September issue of L'Officiel China. He's also giggly and delighted with his husky plushie, but only if I move it and make sounds like a puppy (panting, barking, nosing at his hand, etc.) It's as if the puppy comes to life and he can't tell I'm the one doing it. Otherwise, he ignores soft toys completely.

Food-wise, for the past few days Alan's taken a great liking to all manner of beans, such that they've been his main source of protein: boiled edamame, peeled lima beans, the crunchy tops of bean sprouts, green peas in stir-fry, green bean paste, red bean paste... this on top of the daily pumpkin porridge, banana, and little white yu nai yams. At the same time he has been pooping ENORMOUSLY, often in several diapers in a row. It finally occurred to me tonight that these two facts might be causally linked.

Tomorrow I'll try giving him his old mainstay, which tends to slow things down: vegan coconut yogurt.
