petronia: (fashion)
On Saturday I attended Justin's birthday party at Gibby's. Justin's thing is he doesn't want gifts, he wants an expensive evening out and for his friends who can afford it to spend it with him. Thus the food was excellent, but a 40$ steak (or in my case, lamb rack with herb crust and mint jelly) has no excuse not to be. :P Afterward lazed and talked in Stogie's, a cigar and martini lounge on Crescent. One of the former and two of the latter sets one back another 40$ excluding tip. For various reasons Golitzinsky owed me a drink but was too cheap to spring for a martini, so ordered White Russians that turned out to be 8$ apiece anyway. XD;;

At one point the DJ played "Drop The Pressure" seguing into "Rippin Kittin", which was the first time I'd ever heard either song in public. In fact I went nuts trying to remember what the second track was, it was intolerably familiar but the name wouldn't come to mind.

On Sunday I went shopping with my sister for a prom dress. The mission was gruelling but successful: the dress she picked came from the second (but not the last by far) boutique we visited, was the last dress she tried on, came 50% off at 115$ and I paid for it five minutes before closing time. _o_ It was an interesting exercise, shopping to fit someone who's not me - we ended up with an antique rose dress with a fitted, ruffled bodice and a short flouncy skirt, reminiscent of ballet costume. It looks adorable on sororial unit, who's one of those Chinese girls about as tall as Kylie Minogue with a dress size that threatens to descend into negative numbers, whereas I look ridiculous in anything with the slightest suggestion of ruffles about it. To be fair, she would look just as awful in my prom outfit, which is a little black dress with an empire waist and below-the-knee A-line skirt.

(Note to self: never shop on the top floor of Max Azaria ever again without being properly dressed. All those elegant French-from-France-spouting salesladies make one rather conscious of one's ugly winter pants. >_> My sister and I have decided that as soon as the snow melts we will start wearing skirts. The snow, alas, only accumulates further.)

Last night I watched the first four episodes of Furi Kuri. I'll just suppose that a good twoscore undergrad essays have been penned already re how FLCL:"harem" shounen = SKU:schoolyard shoujo; at this date you don't need me to write the analysis. XD Director's commentary was a lot of fun.

Tonight my order from Kemado Records came. My mother hates to have used vinyl records in the house; used to argue with my dad every time he brought one home. You don't know where they've been, etc. So I've never dared to buy any. However as I was surfing the Internet one day I had the following revelation: new vinyl records are just as clean as the plastic-wrapped CDs in the HMV megastore. In fact, if they are white vinyl like the Lansing-Dreiden single I bought, they match the decor perfectly, ha ha! ...Potential for so much trouble, and I don't mean forgetting to change the setting from 33 to 45.** Never realised how old and craptastic the record player was. The table wobbles and the less said about the speakers the better. The CD changer in the sound system proper is also broken. >_< Our home electronics are severally reaching the end of their planned obsolescence cycle.

** I, uh, didn't even realise it until the second song. Geez, it just made them sound more like Joy Division than they already did, yanno?
