Listening to Rufus Wainwright too much would probably make one skinny - as if one needed another excuse. (I was trying to come up with an evocative description of that instantly recognisable quality to his voice - the Eastern Canada nasality that comes out as a slur on the words - and ended up with "an angel who's overdone the claret". Go ahead and laugh, K, I dare you.) I was in the weirdest mood getting out of work this afternoon, sort of emotionally stilted and physically hungry without being the least tempted by any of the edible options available; this on Saint-Catherine at that. Was going to see 28 Days After but in that state of mind a proper zombie flick would've wrecked me, and Down With Love wasn't playing at the Paramount, so ended up in 2 Fast 2 Furious instead. Car pornography, that, and like all porn films the, um, plot and display of thespian ability left somewhat to be desired. I don't know if I was missing Vin Diesel's acting chops (no, how seriously sad is that) or if I just wished they'd stop making the attempt. Probably the latter, in fact, because the cars were definitely hotter than in the first film. Initial D import territory, what with the Evo and the Skyline. But y'know, Initial D is better car porn, because it doesn't even pretend to be about anything else.
(You know what's the problem with IniD slash, if you ask me?** It's the fact that, once away from the actual vehicles - as one has to be to do anything, because those Japanese sports cars have back seats the size of matchboxes - it becomes very difficult to convey that the slash is basically just a sublimated version of the car porn, not the other way around. It's like writing Slam Dunk AUs. It doesn't work unless you replace bball with something the characters care equally about; enmity between yakuza clans, say.)
The car porn of tFatF never even intersected with the car porn of IniD in my head, though, and I always wondered why. This time around I realised it was because of the soundtrack. If you muted the sound on IniD and put on a lot of rap records instead, it'd intersect immediately... for what that's worth.
