You've done it before, and it doesn't inspire you to be creative; it inspires you to huddle and shiver with paranoia and creeping alienation. Henceforth only read Alan Moore when in the mood for a bracing bout of paranoia and alienation, possibly coupled with quantities of strong drink that isn't marula cream. Because there's just no guzzling marula cream.

Dear saints alive, there's a tiny cochineal-red spider crawling down the side of my monitor.

So that this post attains some simulacrum of purpose, anime! On dial-up I can manage something like one episode a week. Yes, I'm looking into DSL. Yes, I laboriously collected the end of GetBackers. Yes, I'm still to a large extent dependent on the kindness of friends for my entertainment. Last week I watched Saiyuki Reload, and it's probably going to be the last episode I catch until I, er, read past the first couple of chapters of the manga. ^^; Manga count for context's sake: half of S to M read (French history is like the chickenpox virus, it never quite leaves you), still have to flog myself through the last chapter of Count Cain vol.3 - reading it in the metro to and from work - first couple of chapters of Reload. Skimmed all of Nana vol.6-8, screamed, gurgled, cursed Yazawa Ai's camels and let it slide for a while. Am trying to set aside a mythical chunk of time when I can sit down and read all eight tankoubon of Trigun Maximum in a row; y'know, right after I finish playing Xenosaga... and Wild Arms 3. I borrowed Wild Arms 3 from a friend the other day, because I lack self-control and all sense of proportion. Hey, I thought, guns and the wild west! What a neat segue!
Speaking of which this week's test episode is Gungrave. Well, it's Nightow and it has guns; all's right with the world, as Browning would say. The animation style is all stark shadows and overexposure, and makes me think reflexively of Hellsing. My best guess at this point is that the narrative structure is going to resemble Berserk: that is to say, a big long horking multi-dozen-episode flashback sequence, and soon at that, because we seem to be in the awkward middle if not the end of Actual Events. /distraction: red Kiryudo peon currently crawling across screen/ Oh, and heard Koyasu somewhere in there. The tinder piles are all in place, we'll see if it lights.
An awful lot of Japanese sites are burbling about the new Papuwa anime...
