no surprise
Aug. 12th, 2003 11:31 pmThe bad news: the past few days are catching up to me. (Yes, it's consulting, of a sorts. Yes, there was a meeting again tonight.) The English language as spoken by other people makes me go "...Whuh?" And I'm getting a sinking sensation I don't often experience but hey novelty is a wonderful thing, to wit, this here fic is growing all straggly and maybe should be pruned. Or split and repotted into two fics. Or I could learn to can the Gibson references for once, which is difficult because ura-Shinjuku/Mugenjou is basically a Gibsonian setting. That's just as much Bridge as Cyberspace, mind.
On the other hand, I'd like the live-action movie to be directed by Miike Takashi. It's not as scary as it sounds; the last movie I saw of his at FantAsia played out like Capra, I swear, a sweet-natured comedy about, uh, homeless Japanese senior citizens pulling a stock-market blackmail scam with the help of a bankrupt printer. In Kansai dialect so thick you could cut it with a hacksaw. But only once did they threaten to shave a yakuza's balls off with a hand scythe, and they didn't even make good on it! It was positively heart-warming.
...Haha. No, seriously, what I'm trying to say is that Miike deals by predilection with the margins of Japanese society, observing with a greater or lesser degree of humour and respect the people who may not have fallen through the cracks yet, but are close enough that they can see the spaces between. About 80% of the characters in GB fall into this category.
The good news: scored new CDs of Brotherhood and Movement, 25$CAN for the lot. New Order on summer sale at HMV - that's like the four-member horsey set out for a ride and a picnic. And Jack Johnson has a new album out. It's not as splendiferous as the first, and most of the songs are like 90 seconds long, but it hardly sucks. How could it?
The truly glorious thing about New Order is that the more brain-dead you are, the better it sounds. Music for times when I can't even parse music. Brotherhood is perfect now.
Have I given anyone the urge to run out and buy Astor Piazzolla or Gotan Project, by the way? Or is it just - what was it - sl0ring every Ban/Ginji fangirl in the world onto "Regret"? (Will answer email tomorrow, Jae. You'd like a less collapsed me better anyhow. XD) If not... you should. Is all I'm saying.

Date: 2003-08-13 07:15 am (UTC)hrrm. don't know who was releasing New Order stuff in Canada, and actually can't remember if the US one had it too---but i've got the German version of Brotherhood on CD (as opposed to the Factory vinyl, which is at home), and it also has "State of the Nation" tacked onto the end of it. the album's really supposed to end with "Every Little Counts," and originally the idea was to have each format of the album end the song slightly differently: the vinyl would have the sound of the needle running off the end of a record that all the versions ended up with, and the cassette would have the sound of a cassette getting eaten. don't think CDs were taken into account, as the first NO items actually released new on CD (and not retroactively done up that way) was Substance 1987, which came slightly later.
do you have Low-Life yet? that's *my* favourite. probably mostly because of "Face Up," too. which i could go on at length about. XDXD Brotherhood, i really like the way the production is so intensely claustrophobic on it. it's like being smothered in synths! :D
(as for me, i can't listen much to "State of the Nation." it's one of the few songs of theirs i just can't. the music is okay, though not great---but it's one of the few times when Barney's lyrics actually do get to me. plus i don't like the vocal line. XD)

Date: 2003-08-13 07:40 am (UTC)This is about how I like them, i.e. I can hear all four members in the mix at all times. Movement's a bit too post-punk, Technique's a bit too dancey, Brotherhood is just right. *eats synthporridge* So what would a CD version have been like? Would it have started skipping, perhaps, like my satanic Discman? (Reminds me of something the PSB suggested about "E-mail", on their latest, which starts with a dial-up modem noise they taped off TNeil's Mac - were saying that every time they remixed it they should put the latest computer noise. XD)
Haven't got Low-Life yet, mostly because one way or the other I have half the songs on it already. But soon. *g*

Date: 2003-08-13 09:05 am (UTC)whereas Technique is just <333 for me.
This is in part because of all my UW house h0 mentors who have played an unintentional, but h00j, part of my musical tastes. It is thanks to them that I cannot take trance as a musical genre seriously. (I mean ignoring the fact that other companion/best friend at the time was a trance h0 and would shove fluke and the ilk in mine face.)
Ahh, technique, a masterpiece of acid house <3 I like it as an album tho. In terms of singles, I don't think there are really super strong singles on technique. Although, I think mr. disco is masterful. XDXD And vanishing point is a Harry song. >_> WHY am I thinking of Harry songs? No Harry STs, no!! *hits self* I have too many percolating STs as is. -_-
Ditto on State of the Nation. It is not one of their shining moments.
I hate you all. I went searching for Regret remixes. The Sabres remix is pretty good. The Fire Island remix always makes me snerk, cos I think of ghei!pride bois and rainbow flags and wot not. (Fire Island being this island off Long Island that all the ghei bois party at. ^^)
