Nana 4 out in French
Jul. 3rd, 2003 11:43 pmContinues to be the best manga I've read this year. ^_^v It's the brilliant trick Yazawa-sensei has, of writing utter fantasy and making it read like everyday realism. ...Or perhaps not fantasy at that. Une femme n'est pas née, n'est-ce pas, elle la devient? I really do believe this, but in a positive sense. Born beauty is a fluke, but beauty that grows into itself - and this includes the physical - is an act of will. Yukari makes herself into what she becomes, the relationship is a catalyst. One of the reasons I like George is because he understands this as a given long before Yukari does. (Note to self: remember to order the last two volumes of ParaKiss, dumbass.) Nana O.'s growth curve is something like this as well; Nana K.'s may well be. She's actually the most interesting case out of the three, because if there's hope of independent self-validation for her there's hope for anyone. XD I reiterate that out of the shoujo manga I've read, this is the one whose characters most resemble people I know (Shin-the-unflappably-debauched-underage-punk-bishounen-rentboi notwithstanding).
...Junko is basically me with a perm and a rasta boyfriend.
That being said, was amused by Nana K.'s first indies night. Kitchen-sink fantasy again: you know something like Kaikan Phrase is glossy stylisation, but Genki Nana in her flounces and stilettos gets elbowed in the face by tartan-clad riotgrrls. Then a lull in the proceedings, she gets up against the stage, and is then all like, "The ground is shaking! >:O"
(And just for bonus points, continued yuri-tasticness! IOW return of Nana O.'s lolita groupie. Are punk rock fans allowed to dress lolita? *scratches head* Oh well, who's to dictate. Not me, that's for sure.)
...Finally - and you really have to read the series to understand how horrific and vastly likely this is - I rather want smutfic now in which The Dreaded Sakagami pays Shin to dominate her in bed. I blame it all on the Paul Theroux novella I read in Indigo this evening. Read and liked, gosh darn it!
Speaking of traumatic fic, am actually writing for Shot In The Head. *wheezes, runs after deadline*
