Finished the Bujold book.


...The simple, dumb and implacable logic behind the Ivan/By slash thing: there's nobody else left. _o_ Boy *or* girl. Every single Barrayaran down to Martya Koudelka. I don't know what she's going to do for the next book, but I can only admire the intricacy on display here. Nice to read an author who can really plot, I can't do it myself.

(That and all the Vorrutyers have to be bent, because it's the only way I can make up the numbers in my head. I mean, the old Vor... you know that statistic thingummy that was going around about the number of boys in a family?)

I don't think she'll bring back any of Miles' old flames, alas. Not after she'd gone to so much trouble to write them out.

The radio's tuned to Hollywood Confidential and I'm too lazy to go change the station. This isn't good.

It ties up some very nice loose ends from previous books. You may or may not be pleased by that. That's why I mentioned it.

I get this feeling (inferred by reading the novels only) that Bujold's getting bored with these characters and the setting.

I think she is, and that she's having more fun with the Chalion setting. (Currently out, Curse of Chalion, and believe me, there are a couple of slashable characters there if you care to look.) She's written a second Chalion novel (Paladin of Souls) but that's not out yet, and I think she hopes to do more, if not with the same characters, at least in the same world.
