Apr. 3rd, 2003 12:54 amI sense that I am a dork for liking this song as much as I do. But really, it was... '83, wasn't it, that he recorded this? There was an impossible sort of alien glamour, back then, to the first blue-eyed foreigners in Beijing after Deng's tentative ouverture; and to the first exchange students from Red China in the capitals of Europe. Fully as weird as Ziggy Stardust. My family was right in the middle of it, and Bowie has some part of my childhood down in this song that's too fragmented for me to catch hold of otherwise, and that I've never found properly articulated anywhere else.
Bowie sings Mandarin better than Gackt sings English. You know.
