The world-weary admin of the MangaZero BBS makes me laugh. There are actually differing opinions coming through on the subject of Who Won This One, far's I can tell because people can't count. (No, I won't do it. I can't count either.) You'd think someone'd link to the appropriate Reuters article, or something.

I'd prefer it if Hikaru lost, I think, not so much because it's more credible (Yonha's supposed to be the better player) than because it would give the entire Hokuto Cup sequence more lasting weight in the overall scheme of the series. Hikaru wins, the psychological ripple isn't there. He'd have defended Sai's honour and put an end to it. If he loses it becomes an issue, and issues are interesting. <3

Akira won't lose, so the Cup is going to hinge on the Yashiro-Suyon game (!). I figure Yashiro wins somehow, Japan makes the diplomatically-pleasing three-way tie, and both Suyon and Hikaru go into their game with something to prove. That's how I'd do it.

EDIT -- Now also much with love for Lotus Eater's Emma and her bazillion and one pics of Yonha and Suyon being random. Slain with the cute, slain.

Actually, depending on how long they drag it out, they could wrap up the series neatly with a Hikaru win: he has to explain some of the Sai issues, he has a bright future of go ahead, curtain closes. Sometimes I wonder in instances like this (I thought the series might end soon after Hikaru's game with Akira and the dream; particularly as Akira almost guessed it right), if it might not be Hotta Yumi sending out feelers about ending the series. But then, that's my own speculation.

They could have ended it at vol.17, yes; just as YuuYuu could have ended at vol.14, Slam Dunk could have ended after Shohoku vs. Ryonan, Kenshin could have ended after the Kyoto Arc, and so forth. But WJump cash cows aren't allowed to make a graceful exit. In most cases they end abruptly when the mangaka has a nervous breakdown and decides no amount of money is worth the wrist pain. Or, in the case of the truly resilient like the sensei who does JoJo, they don't end at all. ^_^;

HikaGo is set up for another ten tankoubon at least, if Hotta-Obata is to tie up all the foreshadowing threads they've left hanging so far. They could drop it from one week to the next if they so decide, but all a reader can do is hope.

Oh yes, they could've ended Kenshin at the Kyoto Arc, but moving on from long held bitterness.

I'm hoping HnG could end in another 8 columes (I've no idea why, I just like the number 28, it's nice and round... mind you so is 30... anyways), but with so many threads hanging, and the Hokuto cup probably running (emotional wrap ups and such) for another volume, 10 volumes is probably the more realistic number.

And issues are -interesting- I'm all for Hikaru losing, if nothing else, it'll amuse me, and it would mean YonHa (or freaky Asian boy-band reject) will be more of a re-occuring character depicted in dramatic poses in the background, and that would just be so pretty. But yes, your reasoning is perfectly sound, and probably more likely.

It's all about the issues baby, all about the issues.

Lilack (who's still hoping for 28 volumes, despite the fact 30 would make a much better round, and pretty number)
