HnG update: up to chapter 177. *wheezewheeze* It's all very well and sedate now, but when I've finished up to 181 and still have no fic to read - that's when I'll be running around like a psycho headless chicken. Wait if you really want to be entertained.
(Maybe I'll go to Concordia Anime Club next Saturday and hang on someone's ankles until they agree to lend me the series on disc.)
Yonha bothers me. How Yonha bothers me. Every time I look at him he shakes me loose from the manga's universe for a fraction of a second, it's that obvious he took a wrong turn on his way to a Motoni Modoru serial. I picture Obata scribbling away and muttering to himself: "make them cute, he says... consolidate the female 12-18 demographic, he says... I'll give him female demographic, damned slave driver..."
(The red hair and white suit help a lot, sensei. En plus qu'il n'a pas bonne charactère. Thanks oodles. -_-)
God Needs A Worthy Opponent To Play Go With: suddenly it all makes sense!
But the question is, does He need someone to be immature with?
("I *so* did not start seven Crusades! It was only six!")

Date: 2003-02-25 04:49 am (UTC)I've also succumbed to the Pit o' Voles and it's a slow and painful process to find anything worhtwhile *sigh* But I shall not despair, I must be brave and march on -_-
breaking the law to have a shounen manga protagonist look like Omi with a sk8erb0i dye job
*snicker* HnG seem to break quite a few of shounen laws, the most obvious being the physical growth of the characters, and the sheer prettiness of quite a few of the cast members (I've a rather soft spot for adult Isumi ^__^).
It'd be interesting to see the list of shounen laws;
#1) thou shalt be a brat
#2) thou shalt fight in many a fights to become powerful
#3).... uhh, can't think ^^;;;

Date: 2003-02-25 06:36 am (UTC)See, sometime last night I figured it out. There's actually two things happening here:
1) He doesn't look like he belongs in the manga at all - or in Jump, for that matter.
2) He doesn't at all have the personality you'd expect him to have, if he were a character in shoujo manga.
Yonha's like a little kid: totally not with the responsible, likes poking people to see how they jump, and has the foresight of a gnat basically. In fact he's more like... a meaner and less sunao version of Le Ping, and if he looked like Suyon it would all make much more sense. Just that Obata abandoned the usual shounen visual semiotics by the roadside, I reckon sometime around when Isumi stopped looking like a typical shounen nice-guy oniisan and started looking like a schoolyard shoujo primary love interest. ^^;
Messing with visual keys
Date: 2003-02-25 07:17 am (UTC)If I didn't know better I'd think Obata is messing with the minds of the fans... albeit on a very small scale. It's rather disorientating to have all of your hard learnt symbols and visual keys in manga being turned inside out. The whole affair is made more discerning as I can't seem to get a handle on Yonha's character, as you said he's a meaner and less sunao version of Le Ping, yet, there's an undelying manipulative and scheming aspect to the man that remind me of Ogata. And more so, at times (very few) he can come across as something more, a person with more depth and much more foresight... then again, that just might be wishful thinking.
Hmm, and a Isumi as shoujo primary love interest... what a wonderful thought. How the 'Isumi no Go' chapters (Isumi n China chapters) should have gone.
