Pit of Voles, part 2
Sep. 13th, 2002 03:16 pmWhen I wrote the last entry I hadn't actually registered that ff.net was banning NC17s. Please bear with me. My brain is clogged with mucus.
I do not actually care about this enough to be indignant. It's their site, they can do what they like with it. I *do* think, however, that they're evincing very little understanding of what their site is good for. ff.net is where I go when I'm in the mood for half a dozen pages of badly-punctuated, improbably-paired smut on a specific and over-popular fandom, all at once. It's the junk food mart of fanfiction. You know how sometimes you just get this craving for a family-sized bag of dayglo-orange cheetos washed down with no-name brand cola? Yeah. Take away all those PWPs in astonishingly poor taste and I honest-to-god am left with no reason to visit the site anymore. If I want good writing and thoughtful recommendations, I know where to find them.
If you ask me - and no one is, I know - the Pit of Voles concept was flawed to begin with. Dodginess is the substance of fanfiction; dubious legality its very soul. It's stuff that's supposed to be scattered over a spiderweb of private sites spun in the undusted corners of the internet, not collected in one big fuzzball making a target of itself for the vacuum cleaner of copyright and/or morality crusaders. If I wanted to be legitimate and upstanding, I'd go write a real book or something.
