Test an iDalek and keep it
Apr. 19th, 2010 08:26 pmDoctor Who S5E03: I really enjoyed this; sororial unit thought it was meh. I was two glasses of white ahead so fair enough. XD; It didn't need to be longer, if it were longer it would've just ended up like the Manhattan one, and tbh I prefer the Doctor waving a cookie in the Daleks' eyestalks to him slathering them with handwavium skience. That aspect of Davies' tenure I'm not gonna miss. XDD
I've decided this season's overarching thingy is Amy's Clunky Canon Sue Moment (1/2 a joke - I don't hold it against the character, it feels like Writing and thus throws me out of immersion**, in much the same way trying to spot the crack on the wall does). Funnily enough no matter what the Doctor does or says I take it as establishing character. Like... he's quite shirty this time around? Saw someone on DW say the Doctor's personality was a flexagon, all the facets eventually show up on a traversal but not with the same frequency... it's conducive to (mental) fiddling with in the same way, I find. XD; OTOH if you think more it gets q. cosmic because the Daleks' plan basically depends on the Doctor yelling at them to reaffirm their existence, and apparently they know him well enough to realize that nothing will make him blow his top faster than if they went around pretending amnesia, wearing Union Jacks and serving everyone tea. Also: Daleks are only Daleks if they're Daleks in the eyes of the Doctor? Good thing the lil' buggers aren't prone to existentialist inquiry.
** Want to stress this is not New To Moffat(tm) - it's endemic to my viewing experience of NuWho. With S1-S4 it was 1) oh gawd the handwavium skience, 2) big signposts saying [CONTINUITY GAP FOR FANFICTION GOES HERE], and 3) let's get real, Rose was ttly a Canon Sue, except with S5 they're making beginner mistakes of trying too hard to convey Amy's coolness, whereas Davies was like "yes I am aware of the concept of Canon Sue, and now she is going to be omnipotent throughout space-time and snog the Doctor, YOU WANNA STEP UP BITCH GO RIGHT AHEAD."
Incidentally I have been trying to get G to watch Doctor Who. So far he doesn't rate Rose's intelligence for going off with the issues-prone alien in the blue box. "She knows nothing about him! For all she knows he saved the Earth because his people feed on human brain tissue! He could have lured her into his ship to EAT HER BRAIN!"
Half an hour later dude is wondering aloud why, when he asks his friends which Star Trek character he'd be, everyone says McCoy.
