petronia: (another one of those days)
[personal profile] petronia
Okay, I have given up doing these in any kind of order. XD; These three are complete in the way of notes, I guess.

The Pyramids of Mars: confusing comment by Sarah Jane led me to this page; now LOLing 4evr at "Davies farked up the timeline" ppl. Finally I understand that entire bit in the Sontaran ep! Which I'd felt whizzing over my head at the time!

Also confused by the Doctor talking about alien Egyptian pantheon on Mars as if we ought to know about them already (and why not, when Sarah Jane is a repository of Egyptology trivia?). This is a Fourth Doctor thing, maybe, he always sounds maddeningly sure even when he's saying he has no idea. ...Something ppl accuse me of, actually, but I can't tell when I'm doing it. XD;; Erm either that or alien Egyptian pantheon had turned up at some earlier point.

You know what Nouveau Doctor Who lacks? POACHERS. :(

Outfit watch: LOL Victoria and Albert. When I was a kid I repeatedly read the first third of a long and stuffy biography of Queen Victoria, before all the politics came in and it got boring. Thus my personal picture of Q-Vic is more Emily Blunt in the white debutante dress than unamused fat lady in mourning gear. But I don't think the Doctor was talking about her. BTW I have taken up wearing my Noro scarf in the manner of the Fourth Doctor; I'd always been at a bit of a loss how to tie it.

Four to Doomsday: Multicultural Day ahahahaha. Adric was nuts in this, like that kid in the NuWho Sontaran eps! I assumed for like an entire episode that he was faking it to gain King Wossname's trust and didn't let Nyssa into the loop just cos of being bitchy.

I haven't watched any of the regeneration continuity stuff (erm except for 2->3, that was MESSED UP btw, more on this later), just to see what would happen to my comprehension of the series if I didn't. Nothing happened. XD; I just mentally assigned the various Doctors Spice Girl names. Posh, Scary, Baby, etc. Tragically there is no Ginger as one well knows. I was unruffled by the 9 -> 10 transition, thinking back on it, though [livejournal.com profile] canis_m said in her opinion the lampshading helped. I'm also, right now, being unruffled about 10 -> 11. Either I'm very accepting as a viewer or the ppl involved are doing their jobs well. XD; However I'm still using the Tenth Doctor as a yardstick in some ways, I find.

Outfit watch: quite like Nyssa's, it's the sort of fantasy princess wear I would've designed when I was a kid. (There were several models, all of which I can still draw; none of which were poufy meringue dresses. Leia was, like, my COUTURE ICON: I caught five minutes of The Empire Strikes Back and my head exploded at the revelation that one could dress like a princess without wearing a princess dress. The purity and force of this is hard to explain in retrospect.) Adric's on the other hand...

Burger King's Subservient Robot, I mean Demons: duuude this was not coherent. Mind you, if the Magna Carta had not happened, England as we know it wouldn't have happened, which would definitely have cheesed the Doctor off, and how else does the Master get his lulz?

OK OK basic rule of thumb: stories involving the Master w/ bodysnatching = srs bzns, stories involving the Master w/o bodysnatching = wut I don't even

(nb this holds for Nouveau Who which is impressive given that John Simm's Master is, like, canonically an AU... in canon... something.)

I was saying to [livejournal.com profile] canis_m that I probably like the Master in the same way I like Lelouch out of Code Geass. (They even kind of have the same powerz!) Something ultimately loveable about the ones who try so hard, like the snowballing moral failure is symptomatic of a broader inability to recognize when one is at eleven and ought to dial back down to seven. Like, Light out of Death Note is a sociopath? Lelouch is just awkward. With the Master I frequently sit there like, why am I embarrassed by this when he's obviously not. Meanwhile the Doctor is like BONDAGE TIEMS AGAIN I SEE >:/

Outfit watch: Tegan is so eighties. SO EIGHTIES. Like my mom's Simplicity dressmaking patterns that she could probably sell on eBay at this point. And she actually gets mistaken for a page. ...I feel like I should say something about the Doctor's outfit but to be deathly honest if I met someone dressed like that I'd just assume he was a hipster going for an ironic preppy look. Vegetable accessory and all.
