You know how sometimes when you do stuff the characters in your head follow along and do the same stuff, no matter how retarded the result is?...
Some time ago I said as a joke that I would make a DJ Yumichika mix. I've come to realise it wouldn't work, though, because no one would ever let him play it out. That is, Yumichika of all characters would probably play proper happy house with divas in instead of my usual fudging and beating around the bush, for example: Greens Keepers feat. Colette - Keep It Down
Except--

There came a tapping on the plexiglass of the DJ booth. Yumichika glanced downward when it persisted, and raised a perfectly manicured eyebrow.
"Yes?"
"Could you play something that's a little more, I dunno, rock?" said Ikkaku. A stray green laser glanced off the top of his head, fanning in all directions like a medieval halo. "Like with guitars. This frou-frou stuff, we're kind of having trouble getting into the zone."
"I'm sorry," Yumichika said. "I don't think I understood you correctly."
"I'm saying, this boom-boom woah-woah bit is all very well and good but the boys don't underst--"
"You are asking me to put something different on?"
"Well, essentially--"
"You doubt my taste in music, is that what you're saying?"
A pause.
"Nononono that's not what I mean, it's just the guys in the division are--"
"Oh look, I have some Coldplay remixes right here. Would you like that? That's rock, isn't it?" Yumichika waved the 12-inch in front of Ikkaku's nose. "Nine whole minutes of Chris Martin. I know the Asano loooooves them."
As well as being out of bounds the blow was largely inaccurate, since the Coldplay CDs lying around the apartment actually belonged to Keigo (and even he would have been surprised to hear them given the context). Ikkaku winced.
"C'mon, don't be like that," he said. "We're dying out here. Just give us a bit of guitar a'right."
Yumichika stared hard. Ikkaku gave a rough facsimile of a winsomely beseeching look and made a wavy gesture with his hands. Yumichika sighed.
"Go away," he said. "Please. Get yourself a beer and wait five minutes."
After Ikkaku had disappeared he sniffed through his nose and turned, flipping rapidly through the record bin.
"Guitar," he said. "Guitar. We can do guitar. I think."
Services - Element of Danger (MSTRKRFT Remix)
IDC - Crazy Frequency
Test Icicles - What's Your Damage (Digitalism Remix No.2)
Another sound, not so much a tap as a shiver - as if something light had landed close by. Yumichika stiffened.
"Yumiiiii, play something faster. This is boring."
Ave Yamamoto! Morituri te salutant!
Yumichika closed his eyes briefly and reopened them before he turned around. Yachiru was perched on the transparent barrier, swinging her legs and sucking on a candy pacifier. Sugar. He would have to find and kill whoever it was that gave her sugar.
"Come on, Yumi. I wanna dance."
The Eleventh Division, Yumichika reminded himself, was totally all about futile battles.
"Vice-Captain," he said, "You have to wait until the track reaches a--"
Yachiru pounced.
"--Aaarrrgh! All right all right, I - I can't see dammit let me just AAAAAAAAHHHH NOT THE EYEBROWS!"
A-Class - My Only Star
"I," said Renji. "I, what. How are you supposed to dance to this." He glanced over at Orihime, who was hopping in place with her head tilted up and arms extended, skirt flaring out around her ankles with every... bounce. Kon looked stunned edging toward concussed, held upright only by the backpack straps binding him to Ishida's back. This did not appear to provide Renji with inspiration.
Ichigo grunted.
"I'm going to refill my water bottle," he said. "Anyone?" Rukia shoved hers at him wordlessly, occupied in biting Chappy's head off the end of her candy necklace.

Digitalism - Digitalism In Cairo: alternately, "The Cure - Fire In Cairo (Digitalism White Label Remix)". Two months later I am still gacking tracks off the ILM YSI thread and going, "Oh, so that's what they played on New Year's Eve!" I distinctly remember trying to figure out what language the lyrics were in (answer: Fatbobian with the consonants edited out _O_).
Audio Bullys - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down): and this too. They only played a snippet of the vocal, but suddenly, Nancy Sinatra! like that makes one perk up one's ears and pay attention.
Underworld - Oh: uploaded in order to form a basis of comparison to another track I've been repeat-playing over the past week:
Booka Shade - In White Rooms
Leaked from upcoming album, painstakingly downloaded from OhMyGoshParty alongside about a thousand other people before Get Physical apparently contacted the dude and coughed meaningfully. XD Needless to say I don't think it's an intentional reference, it may not even be an impressionistic homage to 90s techno (although Booka Shade do seem to craft certain songs as impressionistic homages to times/places/music, "Mandarine Girl" being one - I like that story enough to pull a genderswitch and write it for B*B or something XD). But the updating of the sonic palette, the overall... it's two in the morning and I don't really know where I'm going with this.
Booka Shade - Darko: in any case, the 5-6 tracks I have off this album are all so awesome I'm about resigned to the rest being 1:10 snippets of instrumental filler. It's not impossible for an album to be this consistently good all through, but neither is finding 20$ on the street. :/
