I wanted to see the purple cross on Mount Royal as well. :/ Although saying that just invites uncharitable witticisms.

(I took Sencha up to visit Saint Joseph's Oratory on Sunday. Not that they make that glow purple or anything ^^; but there were portraits of the Pope, and people lining up to pay their respects... In this individuated, mediatised age, how much of the reverence shown John Paul II was for the office, and how much for the man? I get the feeling we'll soon find out.)

EDIT -- My parents say they were "there" when the new pope was announced. XD My dad had parked the car in the square near Notre Dame Cathedral while waiting for my mother to get groceries in Chinatown, and turned on the radio to hear the announcer explain about the smoke signal and the bells. As soon as they ring in Rome, he said, they will ring all around the world. Then the bells rang out in Rome - over the radio - and a moment afterward Notre Dame's bells were ringing as well.

Hmm. Ten or even five years ago I woulda said mostly the man; but there's a feeling these days--which might've been there all along, but beneath my notice--that reactionary social elements gotta stick together, and hence fondness for the office from quarters you wouldn't expect.
