imomus. Currently he's posting mp3s of his demos and taking "shareware" donations aka Ghetto iTunes, and complaining that the Pet Shop Boys won't do a cover album of his songs. (Momus is fulla himself, news at eleven, but that being said one admits that one is not averse to the idea of PSB covering "Bishonen".) And apparently getting slashdotted by Yahoo News Japan. I had not, of course, previously considered this, but - Momus belongs on lj, deshou? XD
M00zik swag! I... I sl0re less when other people sl0re more, because I'm too busy taking it all in. It's like ficcing, really. ^^; No oddities or obscurities this time, just killer pop balladry.
Sophie Zelmani - Going Home
Have I really never lj'd this song? It stayed on my playlist for literally months. Perfect pop: the sunny wistful horns, the piano figure that comes in at the second verse, the setsunasa of the lyrics.
Yes, I'm going home
Going home alone
And your life goes on
(This and the Faye Wong track below were what I was listening to obsessively and on repeat when I was writing "Game Theory", the first PoT fic. Which explains it all, actually. Ced found this album because Faye Wong covered this song in Chinese, with a modified arrangement and completely different lyrics.)
Sophie Zelmani is Swedish; I point it out only because you'd never know otherwise, unless you resort to google journalism. That's how classically American singer-songwriter she sounds.
Heather Nova - You Left Me A Song
Same story as the previous song, it seems; different path, unescapable ending. I was floored recently by the strength of Heather Nova's "Storm" album - white-gauze-and-June-night, Piscean sexiness - because I had a distinct memory of not being fond of her voice. As it is she's sort of like Tatu or Neil Tennant, a miracle it doesn't grate on me. (You'll have gathered I'm not much for high-pitched vocalists. ^^;) And distinctive vocals really are the thing: the songs themselves might be blues if sung by Holly Golightly, or country if sung by Shania Twain, or Sarah McLachlan if sung by, er, Sarah McLachlan.
This track would be a gigantic pop song, but for the breathy singing style and odd chord/syncopation that sends it careening back into alt-territory.
Faye Wong - Leave Nothing
Love triangle! *g* Some reporter had the gall to ask her if this song was based on her own love life, if you can believe it. One of Faye's more electronic numbers, rather akin to Emiliana Torrini or Mylène Farmer circa "Californie". Catchy as all get-out.
The long delayed blurb on Tommy february6:
Tommy february6 - Since Yesterday
The Song That Started It All, Literally: Kawase Tomoko (frontwoman of The Brilliant Green) told her record company people she wanted to cover this song - originally by Strawberry Switchblade, big 80's hit in the UK and Japan as evidenced by the fact that I have a buttzillion versions thereof with Japanese lyrics - and they told her it was too pop for tBG. Thus, alternate universe. *g* It's the glasses, but not just the glasses. "Tommy" is a persona unto herself, an 80's bubblegum girlpop Ziggy Stardust. She's teenaged, uber-romantic, high-strung; borderline-alcoholic, Sylvia Plath by way of early Kylie Minogue. Pink suburban girlhood with a dark side. Her "image" film is The Virgin Suicides; design keywords are 'school', 'sports' and 'surrealism'. (And incidentally, the "6" is supposed to be a superscript, which I don't know how to make, and silent. So you pronounce it "Tommy February".)
Tommy heavenly6 - Swear
Tommy heavenly6, meanwhile, is - Avril Lavigne, yes, gramercy
starlighter XD - but more to the point, she's Tommy february6's split personality, the rockin' side that takes over when Tommy can't deal with the brute crush of reality anymore. (I believe originally they were supposed to be shoujo manga rivals separated at birth... XD) So Tommy heavenly6 knows about Tommy february6, but Tommy february6 doesn't know about Tommy heavenly6, and in fact will deny having cut the "Wait Until I Dream" single in interviews. Wakaru? XD
More Tommy february6, from off the latest album:
Tommy february6 - sEpia memory
DRAMATIC SYNTH EXPLOSION. XD The songwriting/production credits on Tommy's tracks are pseudonymic and generally t0p s3kkr1t, but whoever it is are - I swear this - the Japanese Stock Aitken Waterman.
Tommy february6 - I still love you boy
The first Tommy ballad evar; thus, sounds as if it could almost be a Brilliant Green track, if it weren't produced to be so reminiscent of Chris de Burgh. (I really should post some tBG for comparison's sake.)
Tommy february6 - Love is forever
How do you go wrong with this song? You don't, and that's all there is to it. It's the musical personification of shoujo sparklies. XD
And as a bonus (well, it's all bonus really):
Tommy february6 - I'm In The Mood For Dancing
Nolans (early 80's British girlpop again) cover, B-side to the "Je t'aime je t'aime" single. IIRC correctly Bonnie Pink's also done a take of this, which I'd dearly like to hear.
