Apr. 11th, 2011 03:34 pmFrequently recommended to people who feel Gibson is poor at plotting novels. I have to say: not all these short stories have particularly strong plots. XD The earliest Sprawl pieces were more proofs of concept than anything. Also, several are co-authored! Several take place in space! I'm not sure why the Bruce Sterling co-write about the Soviet space station doesn't feel more dated than it does. Possibly because 1) the vision of technological obsolescence is pretty much on, 2) Russians will be Russians, 3) I'm still of a generation psychologically affected by the experience of Communism.
The Keanu Reeves version of Johnny Mnemonic, which I watched during its theatrical run, was a mediocre movie but went on to explain stuff the ordinary viewer/reader would expect from the given outline that Gibson simply failed to bother with, like what the McGuffin was for. XD; It's probably also directly responsible for Keanu being cast in The Matrix to begin with. What I'm pretty sure it did not contain, in comparison to the short story, is a heroin-junkie world war vet DOLPHIN. Molly Millions shoots up a goddamned dolphin. Geebus, Bill!
