FEBRUARY: Abstract thoughts. Loves reality and abstract[ions? Add anal-retentive]. Intelligent and clever. Changing personality.Temperamental. Quiet, shy and humble. (Used to be. See Changing Personality.) Honest and loyal. (Not really...) Determined to reach goals. (Such as they are...) Loves freedom. Rebellious when restricted. Loves aggressiveness. (Only when it's pointed away from me.) Too sensitive and easily hurt. (Even if I were I damn well wouldn't tell you. XD) Showing anger easily. Dislike unnecessary things. Loves making friends but rarely shows it. Daring and stubborn. Ambitious. Realizing dreams and hopes. Sharp. Loves entertainment and leisure. Romantic on the inside not outside. Superstitious and ludicrous. (I am, but I don't articulate it and it doesn't impinge on my logical persona.) Spendthrift. Learns to show emotions.
More correct than not, surprisingly. These things have been getting more and more off-mark the older I grow.
I've just finished vol.14 of the manga, on the cusp of Seigaku vs. Hyotei. Thoughts:
* PMK has apparently drained me of squealing. I'm in this one for plot. *g*
* ...However, these boys are fun. Seriously: apart from Momoshiro and Oishi, every blessed one of the Seigaku regulars is an utter irredeemable weirdo. INUI. HOW WEIRD IS INUI? NOT THAT I DISLIKE INUI OF COURSE, BECAUSE HE IS ODDLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DISLIKE. I'll stop shouting now.
* I love Fuji for drinking the Smoothie of Death and enjoying it. That, for me, sums up Fuji's character. (And the slightly creepy niisan bit.)
* Dratted mangaka has to let us see Tezuka play sometime. That boy is like... like Ban vs. Raitei, anthropomorphised.
* Speaking of which, y'all are just sitting on the Kaidou-snake-god-from-outer-space joke.
* The interactions between Ryouma and Nanjirou are WAFF. They're like Tidus and Jecht without the hate.
* I think I have like this shameful desire for Karupin x Ryouma doujinshi in which Karupin turns into a bishounen and molests Ryouma.
* ...But really it's Momo x Ryouma.
* Well, really, it's Ryouma anyhow and with whomever, yaoi or het or what have you. Yes, I know he's twelve. He's also exactly my shota-type, the poor kid.
* Oishi and Kikumaru squabble! For fifteen minutes. Aw, that was cute.
* Every time I see Kikumaru I get an anxious feeling, because I know Tokugawa Ranko likes him. And we all know what happens to characters Tokugawa Ranko likes. *twilight zone music*
* At one point I found myself inadvertently having a nastily sadistic non-con Fuji x Mizuki fantasy. This isn't something that happens very often to me; it seems to be my brain's way of dealing with a character I find dew-eyed pwetty but who makes me react with sinus-clearing outrage, and whose humiliation wasn't drawn-out enough in canon for my delectation. Like Rufus, say, or Asagi. Mizuki's in good company.
* ...Uh, despite all of the above it's not about the slash for me. Really.
* Akutsu, on the other hand, just made me laugh.
* Am fond of Fudoumine (the Shohoku of this series, of sorts). It's quite pleasing to have the familiar spiel reeled off from the POV of what is effectively Kainan. Saves an awful lot of playing randomzoid unseeded teams, if nothing else. *eg*
* Cannot, however, shake the impression that muttering!Shinji out of Fudoumine will eventually crack for good, and will be found wandering on the side of the highway with bloodstains on his racket strings and no memory of the past 24 hours.
* Get on the damned court and play, Atobe. For fook's sake I'm tired of listening to your image songs and inadvertently thinking of Fuuma or Yoshida.
Ha! False pretenses to get you into this cut. XD I don't actually like girly bishounen. Or rather, I like some bishounen who are uber-girly, but not all of them. Quite often they annoy me. I was wondering why this was, today, and then it occurred to me:
What I like are characters who're other than they seem.
This applies to all kinds. I like Ryouma because he appears to be a typical rude shounen protagonist, but he's smart as a whip and can walk the walk. I like Ban because ditto, but there's cleverness and education well-concealed. Ginji because you would never know to look at him how many people are scared shitless of him. Fuji and every single one of his type, despite my better judgment and secret disapproval, because they're too cool to live up to their untapped potential. Schuldich because his power is perhaps the ultimate personification of that hidden "other". Sexy evil German redhead, yes, but no one has any hope of imagining what it's like inside his head.
I love - with great wibbling love - the fact that Amaterasu is Ladios Sopp, and all the other variations on this theme that FSS does so well.
Thus, girly bishounen; girly dew-eyed limp-wristed not-terribly-heterosexual bishounen who could kill you as soon as look at you. I've always liked that Nuriko's seishi power was physical strength. I like the fact that fourteen-year-old Kadzuki could cow opponents with nothing but his battle aura. And I like the fact that Okita is perhaps the strongest swordsman of the Shinsengumi. If he weren't I probably wouldn't care so much for him, for the idea of him.
I like it when things comes out of left field that people aren't expecting. When there's no desire, no need, to display it all on the surface for everyone to see.
Kurono Nanae, it turns out, is eight months older than me. For those keeping track at home, that makes her 23.
...Hijikata is so Japanese in my head that it's a struggle to get him into English so I can imagine writing him. And Yang Hai? Yang Hai is even more Chinese than that. Yang Hai, let us not forget, speaks much better Chinese than I do, and comes with a paddyload of cultural baggage I've never even attempted to vocalise.
This is not to say it's going to be impossible. Merely that it's not going to be boring.
