petronia: (another one of those days)
[livejournal.com profile] sub_divided was here for most of last week. She left Friday morning, I had a 10AM phone interview at the end of which I was asked to prepare a Powerpoint presentation for Monday (otherwise known as "We probably won't hire you but we sure would like a free consultant report"). Since I was headed to Osheaga over the weekend I started on it immediately. Sometime around noon, as I was typing, something got into my left eye - or that's what it felt like - and refused. to. go. away.

I went to the emergency room at the Jewish Hospital. Other than how my eye teared up, swelled up, and HURT WHENEVER I BLINKED, this was 100% due to [livejournal.com profile] nem0's posts about her corneal abrasion, and the impression I got that delaying seeing a doctor made it that much worse. So, uh, all of you out there, don't be afraid of boring your flists with your medical issues! That information may come in handy to someone someday! ...It was a corneal abrasion too, which only goes to show. I got bumped to high priority after only an hour in the triage line which made me feel special, and since I showed up at 1PM I even got seen by ophthamology before they went home for the day. As there was no foreign object (not even contact lens) and I had not gotten poked in the eye, they decided it was spontaneous and therefore highly interesting. The e-room attending was like, "Come back after ophthamo sees you and tell us what they said! We'll be here til midnight! Er, not that it'll take you that long of course! :D"

My typical socialist health care experience, for those of you Americans interested )

Gotta say

petronia: (hmm)
It feels weird not to be at Worldcon, particularly as I have never even considered wanting to go when it isn't being held 30 minutes away from my house. XD;

(RaceFail made me think about it, of course - all that talk about how you don't see fans of colour at conventions. Practically everyone I know online attends anime conventions, but only one or two attend SF conventions regardless of race. Same thing when it comes to offline. The best I can come up with is that I don't think of myself as a "real" SF fan of the type (...type?) that attends conventions, nor do any of my RL friends with the possible exception of [livejournal.com profile] dipping_sauce, which is... weirdly bullshit!?!? And then there's fantasy lit.)

Maybe I'll wander down and check it out? XD;; They have, like, 3-hour tester memberships and stuff. But I'm not indebting myself and standing in line for 6 hours to catch a glimpse of Neil Gaiman or whatever.

([livejournal.com profile] meril, any advice on how these things work? XD;;;;)

Two of the most likeable regular posters on two completely separate Internet forums I hang around have died suddenly in as many weeks.

My grandfather isn't really expected to last til the end of the month. This would be one thing except my grandmother's stage of denial is manifesting itself in not allowing us to visit or call and refusing to hold a funeral. Like most of the women in my family she cannot be reasoned with but I am frustrated that we have all apparently decided to be pussies about this. Add to this some unrelated but truly ugly extended-family clusterfuck. bitter lulz I will probably delete this paragraph once time has passed and I need to instigate filterlock here or whatever

Anyway stay safe okay, peeps? My response to external Bad Shit tends to manifest as horrible paranoia, and that's what's going on now - feelings like the other shoe hasn't dropped. Let's talk about fandomz or something.
