petronia: (damned fangirls)
Watched more Juuni Kokki last night. I experienced a certain amount of discomfort during the Taiki's Education flashback, because I literally had to turn off most of my adult self in order to appreciate it as I think it was meant to be appreciated. Realised later that this wasn't even directly due to the vaunted "girlyness" of the series (My Little Pony and Cabbage Patch Kids? sez Erin. Yes, and Maple Town animals - it's China as 1980s Toyland) but because every narrative instinct belonging to my adult self was screaming that what I was seeing was one big pr0n set-up. XD;;;;; A damning indictment of my historical choices in reading matter both on and offline, I think. (That and it SO IS A FATIMA IMPRESSION CEREMONY DAMMIT. While FSS is not what you might call a pr0n set-up, it does this particular trope multiple times, usually with overtones of heterosexual romance.)

But I did manage to shut down the part of my brain that insisted Taiki was going to be sold off to glorified sexual slavery, and enjoy the actual anime. Keiki, omg Keiki. How can incarnations of mercy be emotionally retarded? Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

Also: fandoms that make you learn kanji readings are good for you. Fandoms that make you learn kanji readings are good for you. Fandoms...

(Keep repeating it until it sinks in. Add to that fandoms that make one ponder the tragedy of immortality - I collect a lot of those, it seems like. Maybe because I believe it.)

Came home and decided to read through all of MoB 5.5, as best to get it over with. Only made it to page 90. Am wimp. Feel exhausted. Possibly this is due to actual physical exhaustion, as I'm operating on my usual lack of sleep, but being wrung like dishcloth by book does not help. Cannot conceive of anyone writing thirty-odd more books like this, even if they are dainty Japanese books that are one third the size of ruff 'n' tuff American books. The woman's stamina is inhuman. Also I would never have said before that one could be a bad Buddhist in quite the same sense as one could be a bad Catholic, but I guess we all live and learn.

The Juuni Kokki novels wouldn't happen to have furigana, would they? It may be all right even if they don't - the worst she can do is insert a passage or dozen in Chinese, right? Ahahahahahaha. *goes splat*

Going to bed, more or less. Will look at election results tomorrow. I say: prepare for the worst and hope for the best, but in actuality I'm a prepare and expect the worst sort of girl. It cuts down the number of nasty surprises.
