Thought (circa ep.26)
Sep. 23rd, 2003 01:12 amInsofar as the GetBackers anime works from the storyline of the manga - which it has done so far in my viewing - it does it better. It's what every shounen anime should be in a perfect universe, to wit, a chance for intelligent editing and rewriting of the hastily-plotted-from-week-to-week source material. The foreshadowing makes more sense. The flashbacks make more sense. Heck, most of the flashbacks didn't even exist in the manga version. On two occasions Ban's Jagan illusions are completely altered from the original, for an effect that's far more atmospheric, comprehensible and devastating.
Thank you, series, for the hommage to "The Night Face Up"! I have totally lost track of how many of my ficbunnies you've eaten before I could write them! XD;;
OTOH, MakubeX's classmate in the manga version handing him back the Kami no Kijutsu CD-ROM was just... incredibly appropriate. (Have him lend you Angel Sanctuary next, Sabina mutters. That one has great replay value.)
The onsen episode may possibly be the best onsen episode in the history of animation in Japan.
Dear saints, that ending sequence. Weiss can eat its heart out right now.

Date: 2003-09-23 04:18 am (UTC)There were a few parts of the Mugenjou arc I prefer in the manga (like that entire scene where Ban gets between Raitei and Akabane... it just looked better in the manga, to me... And of course, the fact that in the manga Ban's stupid little gay mini-toga shirt was ripped off), but overall I think I like it better in the anime. Mugenjou arc is the best best part of the anime though, IMHO. (Okay, and the onsen ep was hilarious, the things they added in were terribly amusing...)
After ep #26, though, the anime seemed to become largely filler eps, screwed up manga plotlines, and general not-as-goodness.

Date: 2003-09-23 06:04 am (UTC)The early manga volumes, the art disturbs me...they all looking about 5, and Ginji's head appears to be a pineapple. Much prettier in the show. (Yah, so I'm shallow...) I haven't exactly read the manga so much as paged through gawking at the pretty pictures, and when the dialogue is close I can tell what they're saying, but...not enough to really judge ^^;;
I do think the anime made some good choices. 2nd episode, not making it obvious that Ban gave the old man the vision of his daughter - I thought that was a very nice touch. And then there's some scenes I'm torn about...ep 8/v.4, when Ginji's getting strangled by Ryuudo and calls down the lightning bolt...hysterical bit in the manga when Ban goes to help him up and gets zapped, but in the anime I like the seriousness of that scene (and they look so hot!...um. yeah. soo~ shallow)
Shame the show didn't do Venus de Milo justice...want to Ginji's, umm, dying thoughts. 'cuz, yeah. Tho' I gotta say...last anime arc, plot made me want to beat my head against something, but from the squealy fangirly BanGin perspective...about 10 certain minutes from the last few eps are totally worth the price of admission ^^;
(also ep39, of course. "Jagan defeated!")

Date: 2003-09-23 07:49 am (UTC)My friend pointed out the other day, quite illuminatingly, that if she were the mangaka she'd concentrate on getting all the plot out of the way before she had Ban and Ginji meet up again, secure in the knowledge that the fans will buy every single magazine until then. ^_^;;;
(Nearing the end of the tankoubon - three chapters to go! *pantpant* You have the eps directly after, right? Will you scan them for me so I can keep doing the translations? ^^;)
