It really does feel like watching one of those old black-and-white Hollywood adventure-romances, all painted backdrops and Korngold strings and harem girls with perfectly marcelled hair. Except now with boylove. Really there should be a sort of Wilkie-Collins-Shoujo-o-Meter one could check series like this off against - y'know if it has French aristocrats and cursed Moghul rubies and the Mafia and gentlemen thieves and the Templars etc. etc. And the Casbah. Katherine Neville flashback of doom.
Speaking of which the shoujo-manga obsession with gentlemen thieves has a pretty clear etymology, but where the heck does the shoujo-manga obsession with Berbers come from? Katherine Neville is a coincidence, right? Right?
