Giant single-artist music post

Please comment if you download - I grow curious to know if there are actually people who gack when I make this sort of post, let alone what they think of it, or if it just makes everyone go dotdotdot (maybe I should do another genre-based poll?).

Recently I realised I can't listen to "Shine On Crazy Diamond" anymore without thinking of that scene in C.R.A.Z.Y. where you first see the teenaged Zac, smoking up a cloud in his bedroom and pretending to be Bruce Lee. Of course the whole thing with the C.R.A.Z.Y. OST is you're supposed to have associations with the music already. Similarly "Highway Star" just makes me think of Josuke onna motorcycle now XD (you can score the battle, practically, to the song). I really like Pink Floyd, anyway, they're one of the few classic rock acts to which I can actually claim to have paid attention beyond snippets of CHOM in the car, but if I mention it I end up having to explain that I don't listen to them as classic rock so much as... trip-hop. That is I have very few Pink Floyd mp3s because I listen to them by putting on The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon in CD or vinyl, with a drink in hand on a stifling summer evening, but the alternative in said circumstances would be Mezzanine. (Or Sigur Ros but that much is obvious.) I suppose it would make more sense to argue that IMO a track like "Angel" exhibits a multi-generational Floyd influence but I can't help that in my head it's the other way around. XD;;

I think of a lot of stuff as being "in the same genre" as Pink Floyd, most of which isn't rock at all. The Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas below, for instance, which is technically... Norwegian cosmic disco. I swear I did not just make that up. It's to differentiate it from the Italian cosmic disco which happened in the eighties and was actually comprised of songs about spaceships with lasergun SFX, and as Ced put it kind of reminds one of the Italian bubble chairs currently on display at the MMFA. L&PT is more just cosmic in the same shaggy way as t3h Floyd, and after you listen to them for an hour you never question why it's called "progressive house" again (although ironically they're not progressive house). Also, "Dark Side of the Spoon" ahahahaha.

You get a sense of it just from the file sizes. XD;;

Gotta run, but in response to your question: yes, yes, and yes. XD (The main reason I rarely comment on music posts is because I usually listen days/weeks/ after the fact, by which time it feels like the comment-by-date has well and truly expired.)

getted stuff!

Thank you for the asterisks, they are a help. ^^; How come the Annie track doesn't get one?

Have not downloaded anything yet, am still gawping at the filesizes in justified horror.

I don't really think "The Wedding" is Annie's best song, and similarly the remix isn't one of L&PT's best either (which is not to say I don't like it - I do). Really I just figured if anyone was a completist for Annie or Franz they would grab those tracks regardless, so the important question is best-of-the-rest. XD

I download everything you upload, so. ^^; c'mon, with a tag like norwegian cosmic disco, who wouldn't want it? *g* when I did the m3p3 community exchange a while ago, my person sent me a lot of swedish/norwegian electronica, and some of the songs sound really similar. ♥

Oooh give us some artist names. XD

she gave me a few different artists (which, correction, are more finnish than norwegian), but the only ones I really remember are Boys of Scandinavia, Happy-go-lucky, and Håkan Hellström (though only the first band sounds like the cosmic disco you posted *g*).

Boys of Scandinavia - "Don't Wish Upon A Star" (http://bing.morning-songs.com/music/Boys%20of%20Scandinavia%20-%20Don't%20Wish%20Upon%20A%20Star.mp3)
Boys of Scandinavia - "Good Looking" (http://bing.morning-songs.com/music/Boys%20of%20Scandinavia%20-%20Good%20Looking.mp3)
Boys of Scandinavia - "Why Do You Love Me" (http://bing.morning-songs.com/music/Boys%20of%20Scandinavia%20-%20Why%20Do%20You%20Love%20Me.mp3)
Boys of Scandinavia - "Worse Than A Girl" (http://bing.morning-songs.com/music/Boys%20of%20Scandinavia%20-%20Worse%20Than%20A%20Girl.mp3)
Håkan Hellström - "Kom igen Lena!" (http://bing.morning-songs.com/music/H%e5kan%20Hellstr%f6m%20-%20Kom%20igen%20Lena!.mp3)
Happy-Go-Lucky - "Gloomy Afternoon" (http://bing.morning-songs.com/music/Happy-Go-Lucky%20-%20Gloomy%20Afternoon.mp3)

You drew me in by the "reminds me of Floyd" line. (the PF albums I usually listen to in one piece are, in fact, Wish You Were Here and The Division Bell. The stuff they did when Syd Barrett was in the band, by the way, is best listened to in single-song doses.)

And you know what? You're right. I'll have more comments once I listen to more of it.

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2006-05-18 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I should listen to more of their albums. XD I don't think I've heard any of their early stuff at all, though I do have random Syd Barrett solo tracks for some reason.

I'm glad someone follows my bizarre connection-drawing tho! I think it may just be the way they use guitar samples, even, as well as how long and "tracky" it is without being actively unfocussed.

mp3s acquired and squirted onto my Shuffle; will give them a good listen and comment later after copious amounts of Boozenade, but so far I am a) enjoying, b) wondering what the FUCK you are on about with the Floyd comparisions, and c) being reminded of Gomez.

Man, I totally love your music posts. I think you're the only person on my LJ list with similar tastes to mine ^^; I don't comment, tho, because I dump any MP3s I find over the week into my unsorted directory on my music drive, and then when they accumulate, I shuffle them off to my MP3 player for car listening. Playing good music on bad work speakers is no fun at all ._.

Tend to read and browse through, download whatever catches the eye and then come back after time has passed to download almost everything anyway. XD;

(Not quite sure what to make out of Lindstrøm and/or Prins Thomas. So far, what I have heard sounds good for filling background silence as one works.)

(right, comments backlog time)

downloaded what i didn't have! (as ever with yr posts XD)

I still haven't made up my mind on the kosmische - I really like the shibuya fm dj sets L&PT did, but f'rinstance I'm still not really feeling 'i feel space' (still! though i like the m.a.n.d.y. mix quite a lot). Possibly just that I can't entirely deal with the shaggy, my tastes seem to generally skew more hifi/cleancut/streamlined/minimal/planed edges/moulded plastic/etc at the moment.
