Heatwave music after the heatwave's ended

Now it's rainy and cold and all I want to do is sit and listen to miserabilist music with a cup of tea, but someone out there must have suitable weather, no?

Marta Quintero - Sin desnudar el deseo: oom-pah-pah Spanish pop. Spanish-from-Spain not Latin America. The rest of this album is, like, sevillanas.

Chambao - Pokito a Poko: like Gotan Project or Bebel Gilberto, but with flamenco in lieu of tango or bossa nova. Hey, all the bases need covering.

MONDO GROSSO ft. BoA - Everything Needs Love (Piano-pella): rediscovered this track recently on BoA's Next World collab album (the one with the Westlife duet, yes). Gospel-ish by way of Yoko Kanno. I think if I were to do a Back to Mine I might end it with this track.

...That would be a good music meme. If you were doing a Back to Mine, what would the tracklisting be? XD

A Perfect Circle - Pet: this is my deranged!Kotarou song, haha. Keep your head down, go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums... I have tons of songcalls for Mirage but they wouldn't work together as a mix at all, so I may as well post them from time to time.

Stereolab - Ping Pong
Stereolab - Cybele's Reverie

I think these two are, if not their biggest "hits" (I have no idea), at least their most immediately catchy pop songs. Stereolab is one of those bands where the lyrics fade into the wallpaper regardless of how clever they are. It wasn't until this morning as I was trying to sing along to "Ping Pong" under my breath that I realised the chorus went like this:

Bigger slump and bigger wars and a smaller recovery
Huger slump and greater wars and a shallower recovery
Don't worry be happy things will get better naturally
Don't worry shut up sit down go with it and be happy
Dum dum dum dee dum dum de duh de duh de dum dum dum ah ah
Dum dum dum dee dum dum de duh de duh de dum dum dum ah ah

It's a sarcastic song about economics! (Full lyrics here.) Meanwhile, "Cybele's Reverie" is in French, and the video is awesome - it sounds and looks like a Colette novella.

Speaking of awesome videos: Pet Shop Boys - Domino Dancing

By stunning coincidence "Domino Dancing" is exactly the right speed to walk down the street to in high heels and flippy skirt under a pounding sun, although blond half-naked crypto-gay construction workers are entirely optional alas. ...Does anyone have a version of the video I can put up? (For that matter, does anyone have the extended version of the song used in the video? I would ♥ you madly.)

Speaking of putting up awesome videos, I really should've remembered to link more than a day or so before the YSIs are due to expire, but [livejournal.com profile] mitethe uploaded Mylène Farmer's videos for Pourvu qu'elles soient douces, Libertine and C'est une belle journée. Some of you may remember me ranting about the Specialness of these videos ("Libertine" comes before "Pourvu qu'elles soient douces" in the storyline). Basically it's like a really cracked yaoi manga, except Mylène is only dressing like a boy. To quote [livejournal.com profile] mitethe: a cheerful historical re-enactment of a fatal clash between the English and French armies during the Seven Years' War, with the addition of star-crossed romance, cross-dressing, whipping, catfights, whores**, and general debauchery. In short, good times!

** Note that when we say whores we specifically mean French whores who do not wear knickers (as opposed to the "Californie" video which has L.A. streetwalker type of whores), so not safe for work. Not that you would ever watch music videos while at work.

i'd argue "Jenny Ondioline" and "Lo Boob Oscillator" as bigger 'hits' for Stereolab, but i could of course be wrong. you're lucky you got lyrics that make any sense at all out of them, though. XD not as bad for that as, say, Cocteau Twins, but still. XDXDXD

the "Back to Mine" thing is interesting. hrrm. ^^

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2005-06-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I incline to your knowledge which has to be superior to mine given that I have none. XD

I've always been amused that people actually try to analyse Cocteau Twins lyrics. It's an aesthetic exercise, sure, like looking for patterns in clouds...

[identity profile] jantalaimon.livejournal.com 2005-06-16 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't know how you'd even begin to analyse Cocteau Twins lyrics. XD sounds, sure. abstract music concepts, definitely. but lyrics? *splutters* XD

i'm not the world's biggest Stereolab expert, but i do like them. and was really quite upset when Mary Hansen got killed on her bike a few years ago. :O

Yeah, I remember that too. Actually I seem to remember I heard about that through you. ^^;

You know, I think Marta Quintero did backing vocals for Shakira on her last tour.

Ack, no. Just checked the liner notes, and it was someone else with the same last name.

Will DL later but for now~ Haginomumble Ch. 4 (http://sekaiseifuku.net/omake/Haginokouji_ch.4_%5bSHI-RAN%5d.zip)

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2005-06-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thankee! ...Is there another volume of this? *scratches head*

[identity profile] canis-m.livejournal.com 2005-06-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I only see the one volume on J-amazon, so I dunno if the series got discontinued or what.

If you were filled with gratitude, you could thank me by writing that Gyousou drabble ahaha.

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2005-06-16 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I was thinking about that. I've been thinking about it all day. And doing research by reading up on Yuan-dynasty... er. It's one of those stories I have a better idea of in theory than in practice, which is actually a problem I've been having with a number of these drabbles. ^^; But I shall persevere.

I've seen the Libertine video. Brilliant stuff. Why aren't more music videos like that? :)

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2005-06-19 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I wish they were. I love music videos, but most of them aren't as interesting as they should be.

Am thinking of posting some of the cleverer ones in my collection...

I think you'd get some good responses...

You just gave me four songs I'm so going to declare "travel music". *_* I'm always on the hunt for those. They have to be special. ^^

The two opposite sides of the world seem to have swapped weather, as we had rain and cold wind last weekend. Now they're replaced by 32 degree sunshine here. Global weather is a bitch. >.>

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2005-06-19 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes. I don't know why they can't just average out to a daily 24C. XD Glad you enjoyed the music!

[identity profile] morphaileffect.livejournal.com 2005-06-17 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
oh my god.

"domino dancing" is one of the songs i've been trying to hunt down for YEARS. i never knew the title or the lyrics O___O

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU.

why is it that nearly all the songs i've been wanting to go back in time for are either by pet shop boys or the cure -_-;

[identity profile] petronia.livejournal.com 2005-06-19 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you're welcome. XD And yes, I've noticed that - whenever I post an old PSB classic there's always someone who goes "I've been looking for that one!"

[identity profile] mitethe.livejournal.com 2005-06-18 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh...Spanish pop and flamenco. *_*

No worries, I'd decided to re-upload the Mylène Farmer vids anyway. Re: Pet Shop Boys, will this do? (http://s36.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3MYYMJ2FC6LYN03XSVDD3IYG3K)
