Hmm, with Kira I didn't really get much of a sense that there was a huge omitted backstory that Araki had left out, mostly because there was that explanation about the hand thing, and I figured it was enough.

I was kind of disappointed that we didn't get to see an excerpt of Pink Dark Boy (on the other hand, maybe it would have been too scary or too meta-ish).

Isn't it great how we go from the small-town hijinks of Part 4 to the baroque and dark mafia saga of part 5? Such a change in tone....
