One more (short, comedic) piece to go, then I'm closing up shop until season 3. I am supposed to be writing original fiction for the writing group, from now until July. XD

(The Weight of the World is basically a novel, scope-wise. Having written the 23k word version of the story I can see how one would write the 80k word version. Maybe that should be the modus operandi, going forward.)

(This was my Yuletide fic. I wrote 1000 words of it one random day a year ago, 500 words while down with a stomach bug in Buenos Aires -- anyway it rained torrentially and I had no umbrella -- 500 words on the plane back, and 500 words in the last 30 minutes before the AO3 collection opened on Christmas Eve, after having wrapped all the presents and cooked Christmas dinner. I was totally calm about this, for some reason; I felt like Buzz Aldrin landing the Lunar Module.)

(This is my Hannibal Big Bang fic, so I've written 6/8 chapters to date but it won't finish posting until March. It's the most pretentious story I've ever written, in the face of some admittedly stiff competition. Variously: Hannibal steals a dog, Clarice goes to the opera, Will is done with everything.

So you know sometimes you put pen to paper like "I'm going to write something dumb to unwind from my other WIPs which all require a ton of thinking," and then, 2,000 words in, you start seriously judging yourself for your life choices?

Canadian Thanksgiving weekend was infinite Youtubes of (varyingly trashy) Russian electro-pop, baked ham, and this.

My favourite scene in The Avengers was the Steve/Tony/Bruce three-hander, which I never got to in my truncated analysis. The sort of character evolution via cross-cutting dialogue you imagine it's a pleasure to write for good actors, and that actors surely prefer to endless vistas of green screen, even if they did sign up for a megabuck superhero flick.

In other news, EPISTEMOLOGICAL HULK SMASH haha okay no I'll stop.

Chapter 3. )

1) Steve Rogers is not allowed Lana Del Rey music videos. Anything but Lana Del Rey music videos.

2) As soon as I opened the MORE PLOT gate Tony Stark took over everything, which is to be expected but creates a morass of POV issues.

EDIT -- wait did I actually forget to post the finished chapter to LJ/DW? Ahaha. *copypastes from Tumblr*

Title: The Motion of Bodies In Public Spaces (chapter 2)

Author: Petronia

Rating: G (I knoooww, why read it until/unless I declare a pairing, but at the moment it seems beside the point? This is one of those slow builds like Senza Fine, though, so I think I can promise eventual emotional payoffs. If anyone is particularly invested in seeing me write Steve/anybody makeouts pls reply by separate post)

Characters: I've listed everyone I know will be in the fic in the AO3 tags, even if they're not in this chapter.

Warnings: none apart from the same Steve Rogers feels currently infesting Tumblr as a result of leaked deleted scenes and such. He and John Watson can stoically refuse to speak to their therapists together.

Next Chapter:
I thought it was just Aliens, but the more I think about it the more I realize all James Cameron movies are potential minefields insofar as Steve is concerned. EVEN TITANIC.

I explained to Erin yesterday that writing this was like one of those fiddly lace knitting projects I sometimes see my friends take on -- intricate and never seems to get any bigger, no matter how much you work on it. So on the one hand it feels rewarding, but on another you just want to set the thing on fire.

I'll probably post it to the fandom comm tomorrow.

While poking around at Ellen Kushner's LJ last night, I found a link to someone's notes for a Worldcon 2009 panel I attended; though I think it was a different one (something to do with alternate history fiction?) after which I asked EK to sign my copy of Privilege... I enjoy the Swordspoint series, but as novels go they've had an oddly disproportionate influence on my life. I started doing radio because EK told me to do radio. Of course it wasn't as cause/effect as that but it felt like the thing that made it happen at the time. Then there was the three months or so where they thought my mother might have macular degeneration (the diagnosis ended up being something else), which would have given me a 50% lifetime chance of developing macular degeneration. I think I may not have mentioned this very much on LJ? But one doesn't know what will make one feel better about something like that, and in my case it was these stories.

Igloofest hadn't yet started when I wrote this, so I, uh, played this Skrillex radio set very loudly on headphones at 2AM. (I have thoughts about that set: I think it may be best-of-year, if only because so many of the individual songs on it are kind of terrible, so one can credit only canny mixing.) The dumbass who lost three beers in succession to a dubstep set was me, obviously.

One Week One Band is done! Ha. HAHAHA. Look, my top rate for non-fiction is higher than my top rate for fiction but I still impressed myself by not flaming out horribly, okay. I'm not actually sure how many words I wrote in the past week - slightly under 10,000 would be my guess.

The Charlotte Gainsbourg Posts(tm), in order:

  16. IRM pt.2: "Le chat du cafe des artistes" (2009) and Jean-Pierre Ferland
  17. "The Operation (Superpitcher Remix)" (2010)
  18. Stage Whisper and "Paradisco" (2011)
  19. "The Songs That We Sing" (live 2011) and conclusion

* * *

If I had to do it again I'd start in on 5:55 sooner, without attempting to stick to a chronology. Like, the flow would've been a lot better if it were the Madonna quote and Interview blurb, then "5:55," then the Evene interview, then "The Duellist," then the massive essay, then "If". But it's not too bad considering I was posting in real time and couldn't go back and reorder or rewrite. XD; I covered everything I'd wanted to say, anyway, in an order whereby each post mostly built on the last's ideas, which was my best case scenario when I started.

In other news, Christmas card shortfics are starting to trickle back:

The Motion of Bodies in Public Spaces by [archiveofourown.org profile] Petronia for [archiveofourown.org profile] arboretum
Fandom: Captain America/The Avengers (nebulous post-movie continuity)
Characters: Steve Rogers + the usual
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Rating: Gen for now
Wordcount: 854 words and counting

It's really just the beginning of the fic proper (the second part is about 75% written), but I wanted to post it because it was Christmassy. XD; IDEK where this came from? It's not really an "Avengers movie" story, I think, more a "fixated on the underlying SF premise" story. Though I totally expected anyone else to write the Steve Rogers + "I'll Be Home For Christmas" idea, and was really puzzled when it didn't happen.

Oh, large fandoms. This trifle had 100 hits in less than 24 hours. That's a lot for me, though small potatoes compared to the traffic One Week One Band was getting.

Wordcount: 4584 words

I very deliberately did not re-read the novel before writing this. XD; What I did do was drink some delicious Three Musketeers weizenbock and make a perspective drawing on my IKEA whiteboard of ground-to-air missile defenses around the fortifications of La Rochelle, which was a big hit at my Christmas party.

The giftee would have liked something sexier, methinks, but I found I couldn't quite do it with this fandom; all I had were decades of accumulated Feelings(tm) about Milady. XD; [archiveofourown.org profile] hauntologie is That Person Who Wrote The GunPr0n in XM:FC, though, and I loved the fic in question, so there is a little bit of that.

So yes, I wrote a story about the fake reunion of a fake indie band while faking William Gibson's style. XD; This got a great comment-to-hit ratio for AO3, though the fandom's a minority interest even for Yuletide.

the fuckyeahthecurfew Tumblr reblogging Pitchfork Reviews Reviews' review of Pitchfork's review of The Curfew reissue )

This was interesting as a writing exercise for two reasons: the characters turned out to be indivisible from Gibson's prose style, and I had to dial back my own process to get it right. Gibson is a lazier writer than I am!

Finally.

Speak, Mirror [Black Lagoon: Yuletide gift for [livejournal.com profile] escalove]
I offered this because I could cheap-ass my way through it; so cheap-ass, in fact, that I wrote what amounts to a mock!canon episode. The recipient, too, was asking for stuff like evocative setting descriptions ahahaha in retrospect I'm not sure why I didn't write Malacca but call it Roanapur since it made no sense for anything to happen in Malaysia. It was meant to be Revy/Eda but the structure didn't allow for nun muffdiving. When I look at it I can see the phrasing I borrowed from Bester and Bradbury, like swiping someone else's coat for a corner store run when you can't be bothered to dig in the closet for your own.

So that's 11000 words of finished project, plus 1500-2000 words of abortive origfic fragments (mostly SSBB attempts XD). Here is one I'm likely to pursue:

Werner moved into the new studios in March )

Conclusion: a reasonable tally, for me, and when one considers that for two years I wasn't able to write at all. No wonder, too, because it's the same energy I used to get through b-school, only turned completely inward. Writing fiction for three hours takes the same effort as sitting a three-hour exam, judging from the level of hunger it induces. ^_^; Writing for three hours every two days for two weeks is therefore as strenuous as finals period. B-school taught me to turn the tap on at will (I never thought it would help with writing, of all things), but I can't point the hose in two directions at once.

Resolution: I had a wordcount resolution for '09 and frankly forgot about it. XD; I'm reasonably certain I made it, though, if blogging counts. In early 2010 I want to finish that one Tenipuri story, and the one originally started for the SSBB fashion/dressup issue. After that... we'll see.
